How to replace the Processor on a PowerEdge R7715

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the Processor and a PE R7715. The procedure will also include removing the System Cover, Air Shroud, Cooling Fan Cage Assembly, Heatsink Module and reinstalling them.

Removal

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock counterclockwise to the unlock position.
3. Lift the release latch until the system cover slides back.
4. Lift the system cover off the system.

Air Shroud

1. Identify the air shroud highlighted in blue.
2. Press on the side release tab and lift the secondary air shroud out of the system.
3. Hold the edges of the air shroud and lift it out of the system.

Cooling Fan Cage Assembly

1. Identify the cooling fan cage assembly highlighted in blue.
2. Lift the blue release levers to unlock the cooling fan cage assembly from the system.
3. Hold the release levers and lift the cooling fan cage assembly away from the system.

Heatsink Module

1. Identify the heat sink module highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Torx #T20 screwdriver, loosen the screws that secure the heat sink in reverse order.
3. Lift the heatsink from the system.
4. Remove the thermal grease on the processor and heat sink by using a thin lint free cloth. (as shown in the video)

Processor

1. Identify the processor highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Torx #T20 screwdriver, loosen the captive screw on the spring loaded retention frame.
3. Hold and rotate the retention frame until it is fully open.
4. Lift the rail frame by gripping the two blue tabs and rotate the rail frame upwards to a vertical position.
5. Slide the carrier frame together with the processor out from the rail frame by holding on to the green tab.

Install

Processor

1. Identify the processor location highlighted in blue.
2. Insert the carrier frame with the processor into the rail frame until the carrier frame clicks in place with the rail frame.
3. Close the rail frame down and press the blue tabs to click in place.
4. Rotate and close the retention frame to secure the rail frame.
5. Using a Torx #T20 screwdriver, tighten the captive screw on the spring loaded retention frame.

Heatsink Module

1. Identify the heat sink module location highlighted in blue.
2. Apply the grease in a thin spiral on the top of the processor.
3. Align the heat sink with the guide pins and then place the heat sink module on the processor socket.
4. Using a Torx #T20 screwdriver, tighten the screws that secure the heat sink. Tighten in order. Do not over tighten.

Cooling Fan Cage Assembly

1. Identify the cooling fan cage assembly location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the guide rails and lower the cooling fan cage assembly into the system until it is seated firmly.
3. Lower the blue release lever and press to lock the cooling fan cage assembly into the system.

Air Shroud

1. Identify the air shroud location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the slot and lower the air shroud into the system until it is firmly seated.
3. Align the slot and lower the secondary air shroud into the system until it is firmly seated.

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the tabs on the system cover with the guide slots on the system, then slide the cover into place.
3. Close the system cover release latch.
4. Using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock clockwise to the locked position.
