How to replace the System board on a Dell 15 DC15250

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the System board and a Dell 15 DC15250. The procedure will also include removing the Base Cover, Battery Cable, Battery, Memory module, SSD SSD 2230, WLAN, System Fan, Heat sink, Power adapter port and reinstalling them.

Removal

Base Cover

1. Identify the base cover highlighted in blue.
2. Loosen the captive screws on the base cover.
3. Remove the screws that secure the base cover.
4. Using a plastic scribe, pry the base cover near the hinges to release it from the system.
5. Remove the base cover by loosening the sides and front.

Battery Cable

1. Identify the battery cable highlighted in blue.
2. Using the pull tab, disconnect the battery cable from the system board.
3. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to ground the system and remove residual static electricity.

Battery

Memory module

1. Identify the memory modules highlighted in blue.
2. Using your fingertips, carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end until the memory module pops up.
3. Hold the edges and carefully lift the memory module up from connector on the system board.

SSD (Solid State Drive) 2230

1. Identify the solid state drive (SSD) highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screw that secures the SSD thermal shield to the system.
3. Slide and lift the SSD thermal shield off the SSD.
4. Slide and lift the solid state drive (SSD) from the system board.

Wireless Module (WLAN)

1. Identify the wireless module (WLAN) highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screw that secures the bracket and wireless module to the system.
3. Remove the bracket to access the WLAN cables.
4. Disconnect the antenna cables from the wireless module (WLAN).
5. Slide and remove the wireless module out of the slot on the system board.

System Fan

Heat sink

1. Identify the heat sink highlighted in blue. Ensure heat sink is cool before removing.
2. Loosen the screws that secure the heat sink. Loosen in reverse order.
3. Lift and remove the heat sink off the system.
4. Use the alcohol pad to clean the surface of the system board and heatsink.

Power adapter port

1. Identify the power adapter port highlighted in blue.
2. Remove the screws that secure the right display hinge to the system.
3. Lift to open the right display hinge.
4. Disconnect the power adapter port cable from the system board.
5. Unroute the cable and lift the power adapter port from the system.

System board

1. Identify the system board highlighted in blue.
2. To disconnect the speaker cable, pry up the bottom first and then pull it away to remove.
3. Lift the latch and disconnect the I/O board and touchpad cables.
4. Lift the latch and disconnect the display cable from the system board.
5. Remove the screws that secure the system board.
6. Remove the screw that secures the system board.
7. Slide and lift to remove the system board.

Install

System board

1. Identify the system board location highlighted in blue.
2. Install the system board into the slot on the system, aligning the ports.
3. Install the screw that secures the system board.
4. Install the screws that secure the system board.
5. Align the pins with the connector and push down to connect the speaker cable.
6. Connect the I/O board and touchpad cables. Close the latch to secure.
7. Connect the display cable to the system board. Close the latch to secure.

Power adapter port

1. Identify the power adapter port location highlighted in blue.
2. Install the power adapter port into the slot. Route the cable under the board.
3. Connect the power adapter port cable to the system board.
4. Close the right display hinge and align the screw holes.
5. Install the screws that secure the right display hinge to the system.

Heat sink

1. Identify the heat sink location highlighted in blue.
2. Apply a pea sized amount of thermal material as shown.
3. Install the heat sink on the system board and align the screw holes.
4. Tighten the screws that secure the heat sink. Tighten in order. Do not overtighten.

System Fan

Wireless Module (WLAN)

1. Identify the wireless module location (WLAN) highlighted in blue.
2. Install the WLAN into the connector on the system board.
3. Connect the black cable to the auxiliary (black triangle).
4. Connect the white cable to the main (white triangle).
5. Align the screw hole on the bracket with the screw hole on the wireless module.
6. Install the screw that secures the bracket and wireless module to the system.

SSD (Solid State Drive) 2230

1. Identify the solid state drive (SSD) location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the notches on the solid state drive (SSD) and slide into the slot on the system board.
3. Install the SSD thermal shield on the solid state drive (SSD).
4. Install the screw that secures the SSD to the system.

Memory module

1. Identify the memory modules location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the slot and slide the memory into the slot at an angle.
3. Press the memory module down until it clicks into place.

Battery

Battery Cable

1. Identify the battery cable location highlighted in blue.
2. Connect the battery cable to the connector on the system board.

Base Cover

1. Identify the base cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Install the base cover and press the edges and sides until it snaps into place.
3. Tighten the captive screws that secure the base cover.
4. Install the screws that secure the base cover.
