HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B Burn speed problems

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 which is only three months old which is fitted with a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE8481B CD writer. The CD-RW will only burn at 48x and will not allow any other burn speed option.

I have used the Roxio Easy CD software supplied with the system and more lately the latest version of Nero and the same problem occurs ie. no burn speed options other than 48x. I have tested a 48x CD and the results were perfect but since it is easier to obtain the lower speed CD's it would be useful to have the options.

I have noted from other messages that there seems to be a problem with this particular CD. I am not convinced that this is a software problem but perhaps a firmware issue. It has even been suggested by other Forum users that this may be a problem with ASPI layers something I am not familiar with.

Any ideas on a solution?
