Processor compatibility for Optiplex 760
Good evening.
I have a Dell Optiplex 760 small factor. A year ago, I needed to attach more hard drives to my PC, so I had to pull out its great processor and get a big motherboard and case. The Optiplex remained unused this time.
Last month, I decided to revive the Optiplex, so I bought a new processor for it. My surprise was the PC didn't boot, and the leds indicated "BIOS corrupt or missing". I bought another motherboard from ebay, and now I get the same code, so I'm suspecting something is going wrong.
Now I'm thinking about the processor... I bought the cheapest LGA775 processor I found because I thinked it will work: """Intel Celeron D 354J 3.06GHz/256KB/533MHz FSB SL7TY Sockel/Socket LGA775 PC-CPU""". I've also tried the motherboards with a """Intel Pentium 4 , 3 GHz, Sockel 775, 1 MB, FSB800""". are those processors suitable for my motherboard?
I'm so sorry for asking but I can't find a list of compatible processors.

Dell OptiPlex 760 SFF supports Intel Core2 Quad Q9550, Q9650, Q9400, Q8300, Q8200, Intel Core2 Duo E8600, E8500, E8400, E8300, E7300 E7200 and E6550 processors. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

Hi Saharsh and thank you.
Woah! I'm very surprised to see that processors with same socket and lower profile are not supported. But this was my error.
Let me do another question: do you guess that the motherboards are OK? Do you think it's normal that the error code is "BIOS missing or corrupt" when you put a non-supported prcessor?

You can have three main causes for a BIOS error: a corrupt BIOS, a missing BIOS or a badly configured BIOS. A computer virus or failed attempt to flash the BIOS could make your BIOS corrupt or delete it completely. In addition, changing the BIOS parameters to incorrect values may cause your BIOS to stop working.
If you are able to boot to BIOS, try resetting it back to defaults and check if the issue persists. If the issue persist you may consider replacing the hardware.

The Intel E8300, 2.9MHz Processor, is ideal, Any higher speed causes system board to run, with indications overheating. Fan runs with noise.

Do you know if you can boot to USB or DVD on this PC? If so, you need to make a bootable USB thumb drive or DVD with the latest BIOS flash file on it and reflash the BIOS. If your BIOS chip is not damaged, this should fix your problem...in theory. If you can boot to USB, I recommend making a bootable USB thumb drive over a DVD because I have had problems booting to a bootable BIOS DVD on my Optiplex 760MT machines. USB is preferable, in my opinion. But this will require that you have a USB thumb drive you are willing to reformat and dedicate it to being a bootable drive with no other personal files on it.
The Optiplex 760 Technical guidebook shows which processors are compatible with your Optiplex 760 SFF.
I don't want to post a link here because I can't find it on dell's site. But ManualsLib has it. Just do a google search for "manualslib Optiplex 760 technical Guidebook" and go to the first result. Then go to page 9.
