RAM upgrade for Vostro 230s

Hi

I recently want to upgrade my Vostro 230s from 2GB to 4GB RAM but have a little problem.  I have checked the existing 2GB RAM from Dell is:

I have checked it's DDR3/1333 type, so I bought a similar one from the same brand:

After I install the new one, the screen is black and having continuous twice "beep" sounds, i.e. "beep beep...beep beep..."

Then I use only the new one, the situation is the same.  I have tried the new RAM on another Vostro 260s which is working fine.

I asked Dell support about this and they replied Vostro 230s only support DDR3/1066.  If I want to upgrade, I should buy another pair of DDR3/1066 RAM.  So, I asked them why it does not support DDR3/1333 but it was shipped to me and working fine.  They cannot answer my question but keep advising me to use DDR3/1066.

Is there anyone can tell me why the exisitng DDR3/1333 works fine but not both DDR3/1333 works together?  Thank you very much.

Terry

Hi Terry,

We regret the inconvenience caused to you.

I would suggest you to restart the system and tap F2 at the Dell logo screen in order to access the system BIOS. Please send me the screenshot of the BIOS page in private message.

Also, I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Thanks & Regards

Thanks Manshu.  As other user is using the computer, I have to wait until they finish their work so that I can take a picture for you.

We purchased 6 of these Dell Vostro 230 Mini Desktops for our office and finally had to upgrade one of them to 4GB DDR3 ram because the new UPS 2014 system update needs more ram.  At first we experienced the same issue as the original postor.  We resolved the issue by updating the BIOS here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-230?driverId=TFK2N&osCode=ww1&fileId=2731098887&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI

After Downloading and updating the BIOs.  Restart the computer, then after it restarts turn off the computer and install your 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM and it should work... Please note Windows 32bit only recognizes only 3 to 3.5GB of usable RAM

We had the same issue and resolved it by updating the DELL VOSTRO's BIOs.

The old BIOS can only read DDR3 1066MHz RAM.

Before installing your new RAM, update your DELL VOSTRO 230's BIOs here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-230?driverId=TFK2N&osCode=ww1&fileId=2731098887&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI

After updating the BIOs install your new RAM and it should recognize DDR3 1333MHz RAM and accept it.
