Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

First you need to determine, the motherboard version your Vostro 200 has and was your system shipped with a 300w, or a 350w power supply?

As already stated the Vostro 200 was built with two different motherboards, either a G33M02, or G33M03.

If your Vostro 200 was purchased with either a Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core or Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has a FoxConn G33M02 motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

If you have a Core 2 Quad processor and a 350w power supply, you have the FoxConn DG33M03 motherboard.

This motherboard can be used for both Quad 4 & Core 2 Duo processors.

The following are largest Core 2 Duo processors supported by the Vostro 200 MT:

Wolfdale Dual Core E7300, 2.66, 3MB, 65W, M0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8190, 2.66G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65Watt, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8200, 2.66G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8300, 2.83G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.00G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.00G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16G, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0

Before installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to version 1.0.16, or higher, as support for new Intel CPU's was added.

I have the E8400 Core 2 Duo installed in my Inspiron 530 MT, together with the Radeon HD 7750 video card.

If the Vostro 200 boots without errors with the e8600 CPU and the old RAM, try the following:

Remove all the 'old' memory modules, then install only one 'New' 2gb module in slot 1 and see if the system boots and if the computer starts normally, then install an additional module and reboot

Does not boot, move the module to slot 2 and again see if the system boots, no boot, try the module in slot 3, no boot, try installing in slot 4.

Still does not boot, then remove the first module and using the second 2gb module, repeat the sequence described above.

Still no boot, try installing any remaining modules, one at a time, using the above procedure.

Continue until you have identified any faulty module [or slot] or reinstalled all modules without error.
Still does not boot, buy new compatible memory modules and try that.

George,

Yep, buying a new ATX case is the smart and easier option.

I have been building my own desktops for many years, yes I know they can cost more, it is far less aggro, than dealing with the OEM computer manufacturers.   But the downsize is that you must be able to service and troubleshoot them yourself, in other words, be your own Tech Support.

Reading the discussion HERE should help with the Vostro 200 processor upgrade.

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to latest version 1.0.15.

Thanks very much for the info.  I ordered an E8500 so we'll see how it goes soon. I ordered the "retail" version so I may have heat-sink / fan issues, but I can work around that.  This old 200 may be around for a couple more years.

The E8500 installed flawlessly with the stock heat sink and fan. The Vostro 200 runs just as quiet but much "snappier". Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the useful information above. It looks good for owners of the Dell Vostro 200.

The Vostro 200 BIOS can now been upgraded from 1.0.15 to 1.016 to run the latest Intel Dual Core Processors.

The list above is great but was posted before the Intel Pentium Dual Core (E5700) 3.0GHz was released.

The E5700 retails at around 50.00 GBP (inc VAT and delivery) and it looks like a great opportunity to speed up the old Vostro 200 at little cost.

Has anyone tried it or am I going to be the first turkey? Does anyone think that it won’t work?

Chris -  So, from your list,

I have a Processor, 440, 2.0, 512KB Celeron, A1

So, i can go to any of the 800 Mhz CPU's for my vostro 200 tower?

Is there an updated list?  I noticed that you posted the last list in 09'.

Thanks,

Both Dell and Crucial state the Vostro 200 supports 4gb of DDR2 RAM, see HERE

But, to use 4gb+ of RAM you need 64-bit operating system, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

Bev.

Capture this thread to a wiki.

Thanks Bev

Will try 4gb+ with Windows 7 64-bit

Thanks again for your help

Just to confirm that I've installed the Intel E5700 3GHz CPU mentioned above in my Vostro 200 and it is great.

Upgrade your BIOS to 1.0.16 , install the E5700 and you'll be running at 3 GHz for only 50.00 GBP

Note: The E5700 is a recent Intel release so it is not on the list above (it was released after the list was published).
