Switch replacement 3847 from UEFI to Legacy

A friend’s Inspiron 3847 started acting up after a storm. At first, it looked to be just a bad stick of RAM but it’s now flaky again. We bought a replacement 3847, intending to simply switch the hard drive over. When it didn’t boot, I checked the BIOS of both machines. The old one is set to legacy boot and the replacement we bought is UEFI. How can I change the setting so that he can use his old hard drive in the new machine?

@SVJeff

F2 BIOS and set Secure boot OFF and set CSM ON.

Then try sata operation default.  If that still has problem try sATA OPERATION ATA INSTEAD OF RAID ON.

If bios isnt responding press F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12 F2 F12

replace new 3847 cmos battery w a brand new one.

write down all the old bios settings in old 3847, go inside new 3847 bios and edit when needed to match old bios settings, save changes, exit.

Thanks!  I didn’t think of something that simple...

Thanks for that. I’ll try to get by the office in the next day or two when someone is there to let me in to get the computer. I’ll post my results back here to make them available for future searchers.

That did it - I disabled ‘secure boot control’ in BIOS and that caused ‘legacy‘ to be an option in boot mode. I selected that, turned the computer off, put the hard drive in and it booted as expected. Thanks!
