I am running latest w11, and without notice my laptop failed to boot properly. It does boot but the file manager keeps crashing so the desktop just flashes the icons and a black screen with no task bar.
I have run SFC and dism restorehealth but no problems there. Chkdsk does have some problem with orphaned entries. It does get fixed with chkdsk c: /f and reboot either.
I have a second Nvme SSD installed and that still boots fine. But it won't load the C drive from the other SSD.
I am stuck on where to go next without a complete reinstall.
Any thoughts
Richard
Solved! Go to Solution.
If you haven't, run a full diagnostic (F12 at powerup) on the suspect drive.
If the drive passes but cannot be repaired, it will need to have the OS reloaded. If it fails the diagnostic, replace the drive.
Curiously all the SMART data for the drive said it was ok, so I reinstalled Win11 and that fixed everything even the drive errors on the diagnostics.
It was a software problem not hardware.
I meant to say it does NOT get fixed with Chkdsk!

I ran the full diagnostics and it failed with an error code saying replace the drive.
It was a Crucial P5 and only 13 months old so should be in warranty. I am able to create an Acronis image so I might be lucky and restore that.
Thanks for the help.
