Ran diagnosics tests - All passed

"Last known good configuration (that worked)"

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: savrt.sys

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable componenets, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

As I started to run the Windows setup I noticed after F6 prompt disappeared that I had the option of F2 for Automated System Recovery but now it wants a floppy diskette which I obviously do not have, so I assume it is not an option. [ I was imagining it going to an area of the hard drive and setting things back to factory. ]

Windows Setup

Please insert the disk labeled:

Windows Automated System Recovery Disk

into the floppy drive.

Press any key when ready.

[ Time for lunch. ]

After I had Windows copy there again and re-boot

Black and white:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

(Windows root>/system32\hal.dll

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Installing Windows in existing directory resulted in mismatching image or check-sum error so now I am asking it to do a normal (not Quick) full NTFS format and it just freezes at 46%

If you have not done so, you should run the Dell diagnostics on the drive. It is almost certainly failing.

After two more tries I was able to re-install Windows XP Professional. The first (full NTFS format) failed. The time that worked was "Quick" NTFS format and the notebook is back in service.

dysnena

Those dates also confuse me. 1999 is when I (first) registered with DellTalk. My own magical solution was the step you replied to. For some reason, Full NFTS format resulted in a failure of the setup (re-installing Windows XP Professional after re-format). However, when I did a "Quick" format followed by the setup everything worked fine. I provide support on a grad school campus so get lots of opportunies (challenges). Details of your situation?

What is the model of computer (Dimension? Optiplex? laptop?)

If a desktop, is it small form factor? Tower (medium)? Tower (large)?
