l. Failed Sense Pin in Laptops with HD Audio -- [this section does not apply to older laptops with AC97 audio -- see Section 3]

Dell laptops with HD audio (all models since 2006) utilize switching technology in the headphone jack, which is somewhat complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, the jack uses current & impedance-sensing circuitry to trigger software configuration and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). These techniques are called the "sense pin" in this article. When the "sense pin" fails then there is usually this combination of symptoms:

    * Speakers don't work and are not muted or deselected
    * Headphone jack does work
    * Reinstalling audio driver does not help
    * Audio test in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics passes, or the speakers work in PSA tests
    * On models with 2 headphone jacks, one may be "checked" in the control panel as if in use
    * Sometimes but not always, a very gentle wiggle of a plug in the jack will get it to resume normal functioning, at least temporarily.

That combination of symptoms means that the sense pin is not working for some reason. Failure of the sense pin results in the computer behaving like there is always a plug in the jack. The software switch that should route audio to the speakers does not get triggered. There are 3 ways to confirm that you have a failed sense pin:

1. Check for the combination of symptoms that I listed. If you have all of them then it is pretty certain you have the failed sense pin. Note that when you run the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics you should hear audio through the speakers. That is the opposite result from what one would expect. But note that if you do not hear the audio through the speakers during the tests then there is some other hardware problem, not a failed sense pin.

2. Replace the headphone jack. If that fixes the problem that confirms that you had a failed sense pin.

3. Restore the laptop to its original factory configuration by using Factory Image Restore (on models with Vista, 7 or 8 pre-installed at the factory) or PC Restore (on models that had XP pre-installed). If the speakers still don't work after restoration and you have the combination of symptoms listed above, that is a definite confirmation of a failed sense pin.

Headphone jacks are not designed to be repairable so normally* a jack with a failed sense pin has to be replaced. Changing the jack on most models requires replacing the motherboard, but some models have a separate jack circuit board that can be replaced with a new one. See Section lV below for a list of models with replaceable jack boards. See Section V for some workarounds that will help on a few models.

*Note: this is not meant to discourage tinkerers from tinkering with the jacks. Sometimes gentle prodding or application of pressure on the jack case can restore functioning. On some models a salvaged jack can be soldered onto the motherboard -- depends on the design of the MB and one's ability to work on it. But if you are still under warranty then let Dell fix it or you risk voiding the warranty.

ll. How to Use Diagnostic Tests to Help Confirm a Failed Sense Pin

A. The PSA or ePSA tests. All Dell laptops have this ROM-based diagnostic tool. Use it to rule out speaker failure.

1. Re-start the computer and at the Dell logo screen tap the F12 key until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).

2. At the One Time Boot menu, press the down arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, then Enter.
Look for a "Perform Quick Audio Check" button on the bottom right side of the ePSA main menu screen. Press the button and check if you can hear the beep tones from the speakers.

3. If you do not have the "Perform Quick Audio Check" button then do this. Start the PSA tests and when it performs the color test it will ask you if you see the color bars on the screen. Deliberately fail the test by answering no (press the "n" key) instead of yes. When you do that the PSA test will emit a series of beeps. Listen for the beeps.

4. If you don't hear the beep tones that means that the speakers have become disconnected or have failed. You do not have sense pin failure.

5. If you do hear the tones that means that the speakers are working and are connected. If you also have the other symptoms listed above, you almost certainly have sense pin failure.

B. Dell 32-bit Diagnostics Tests. Most of the older models also had a set of interactive tests named Dell 32-bit Diagnostics. If you have these tests they will run after the PSA tests finish. Dell 32-bit Diagnostics tests the audio chip, not just the speakers like the PSA tests do. However if you have the other symptoms listed above, your audio is working through the headphone jack and the audio chip is okay. In other words you do not need to run the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics, just the PSA tests to rule out speaker failure. Here are instructions for the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics.

1. Run the PSA tests (see above). Dell 32-bit Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell 32-bit Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD that was shipped with older Dell laptops.

2. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. If you do not see audio tests under Custom, that is a symptom of a failed audio chip; however if your audio chip has failed then you would not have any audio at all -- neither through the speakers or headphone jack.

3. The tests will run. You don't need to run all of them. Just check whether or not audio comes through the speakers during the tests. The Dell 32-bit Diagnostics audio tests play a complete piece of music, not just beeps and tones like the PSA tests do.

4. If you don't hear the music that means that the speakers have become disconnected or have failed. You do not have sense pin failure.

5. If you do hear the music that means that the speakers are working and are connected. If you also have the other symptoms listed above, you almost certainly have sense pin failure.

lll. Headphone Jack Problems on Older Models with AC97 Audio (the 2005 Inspiron 9300 and all Dell laptops built before then)

These old models did not have a sense pin in the jack and so do not have the failed sense pin issue, but there could be other problems with the headphone jack. There is a mechanical switch between the headphone jack and the speakers but no software, so if the audio signal gets as far as the jack but not on to the speakers it is a hardware problem either in the switch or in the wiring to the speakers..

1. When you insert the plug into the jack the plug pushes apart the spring contacts and breaks the connection to the speakers. When you pull out the plug the contacts should spring back together. If this fails to happen due to a misaligned contact for example, you won't hear sound from the internal speakers. Sometime gently probing the jack with a q-tip can restore functionality. If the speakers work when you apply pressure to the case then the problem could be a bad solder joint where the jack is attached to the motherboard instead of a bad spring contact. In either case the audio signal is getting as far as the jack but is interrupted from proceeding past that point.

2. The palm rest connection can become loose and cause symptoms that seem similar to a failed sense pin. The palm rest contains the speakers and touchpad. This was an issue mainly with the i8000, i8100 and i8200, Latitude C8x0, and Precision M40 & 50 models. This info was provided by a tech here on the audio board, Aussie Chris, who wrote, "It often will happen after replacing the HDD, most likely caused by the thump being placed upside down. As it was working before the assumption is that it is a driver problem."  Symptoms include no audio from speakers and no touchpad. The keyboard must be removed to check the connection.

lV.  Models with and without Replaceable Audio Jacks

1. Models without Replaceable Jacks

a. Models with AC97 Audio -- Almost none of those older models had replaceable jacks -- the entire motherboard had to be replaced. (The exceptions were the Inspiron 9100 and the XPS Gen1. See the list below.) The models with AC97 audio were the 2005 Inspiron 9300 all Dell laptops built before then.

b. Models with HD Audio without Replaceable Jacks:

Inspirons B120, B130/1300, E1505/6400, E1705/9400, E1405/640m, XPS M140/630m, 1525, 1545

Latitudes D420, D520, D620, D820, etc

(This is not a complete list and might not be accurate. Please send me a P.M. or start a new thread if you have additional or corrections.)

2. Models with Replaceable Jacks

Many newer models do have replaceable jacks on a small jack board. I have included addresses for the Parts-People, but those addresses might not be current now. If not, try googling using the part number. Be aware that usually jack boards are used and might not have been tested to see if they work.

V. Some Workarounds for a Failed Sense Pin

1. Inspiron E1705/9400 Workaround. Should also work on an Inspiron E1505/6400

In Windows XP  you can get audio to work through the speakers by installing an audio driver from Toshiba (driver qg600audiox from the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600) that bypasses the pins. You lose the functionality of both mic and output jacks, but the speakers work again.

Link to Toshiba driver qg600audiox.exe
http://www.driversdown.com/drivers.asp?ID=102232&brNum=3&show=0

Slightly more than halfway down that page it says, “Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 Notebook SigmaTel HD Audio Driver 5.10.4889.0 Windows XP” with 3 links to the qg600audiox driver. When I tested it only the middle link worked (Server 2).

=================================================================

Forum member ZzyzxRd found a similar driver from Toshiba that  works with Vista.32-bit. His laptop is an Inspiron E1505. Go to

http://support.toshiba.com/support/driversResults?freeText=1209148

then click on Filter by Sound. It should show you three files for the Windows sound driver: Select

2. Workaround for Studio XPS 1640, Latitude 6400, and Studio 1555
This workaround was posted on youtube by forum member Niike2  --  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m0uISPAGhg

I have written out his instructions in the steps below;

1. Open the "Sound" control panel.
2. Select the "Playback" tab.
3. Select "Independent Headphones" or as the playback device.
4. Select the "Recording" tab.
5. Select "Microphone Array" as the recording device.
6. Select "Properties".
7. Select the "Listen" tab.
8. Check the box labelled "Listen to this device".
9. In the dropdown box labelled "Playback thru this device" select "Independent Headphones".
10, Close open dialog boxes and return to the "Playback" tab.
11. Select ""Speakers/Headphones" as the playback device.

If this workaround worked, audio will now come through the speakers. This has only been confirmed to work with a Studio XPS 1640, a Latitude 6400, and a Studio 1555. Some people with other models reported that they do not have a "Listen" tab, so I would say this workaround is dependent upon the audio driver in one's computer. The 2 audio drivers that are known to work with this workaround are IDT R261324 and IDT R267814. My guess is that any model that can use one of those drivers and has it installed, can use the workaround.

IDT R261324 is compatible with these models (with Vista or 7):
Studio Laptop 1555
Studio Laptop 1557
Studio Laptop 1558
Studio XPS 1640

3. Workarounds for Inspiron N7010 -- forum member ianmcduck found this Registry edit that had been posted elsewhere on the internet and passed it along to us.

First make sure that your Realtek audio driver is installed or else this will not work.

Next open the Windows Registry editor (type regedit into the search box, then click the 1st item that comes up). When the Registry Editor opens, click the Edit menu, then "Find (next)". Type ForceDisableJD into the box.

If you would prefer to manually look for it, the site mentioned by ianmcduck gives this path:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0015\Settings]
"ForceDisableJD"=hex:00

Change the 00 to 01 and re-boot. Now audio should come through the speakers and the headphone jack at the same time. If this is a problem for you, go to this site for instructions on how to create a pair of batch files that will allow you to switch between the speakers and headphones.

... more from ianmcduck:

"I decided to replace the jack. I couldn't find any for sale so I bought a Dell laptop audio daughterboard off eBay for $5 that had three jacks on it. As a test, I de-soldered one, soldered it back on, took it off again, no big deal. When I took the laptop apart to replace the jack, I pressed down on the top of the headphone jack, it clicked, snapping down. I put it back together and now it's working fine, good as new."

4. Workaround for modes with Realtek audio -- this was something I found posted on Yahoo Answers

"I found a thread on a Win7 forum about reassignment of pin allocations for Realtek HD Audio cards. The pin numbers and registry keys provided weren't applicable to the XPS but by trial and error, I managed to find the relevant keys. The solution is this:

Open regedit (and backup!). Then search for Pin04 (this appears to correspond to the left headphone jack). In this case, it first appears under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentContro…

Amend the current value to 01 (this apparently corresponds to Mic In) and search again for the same key until you have amended all instances. It will appear under CurrentControlSet and CurrentControlSet2 also.

My speakers are now re-enabled though for some reason, the left headphone jack still operates as an output and not an input and Audio Manager still shows it as an output jack! I thought I might have to re-amend the registry if I wanted to use the mic built-in to the webcam but it still operates as normal."

5. Workaround for an XPS L502x with Windows 7 -- this was posted by forum member rjacinto:

"I went back into the device manager, rechecked my drivers, opened the properties for my Realtek driver, and selected the "roll back driver" option. After doing this it prompted me to restart. Once my laptop rebooted I checked my playback devices and switched the default from headphones to speakers and I now have sound out of my speakers again :)  [Note: my Realtek driver never had a headphones option under playback devices]

This left me with the High Definition Audio Device driver. I thought i'd give it another shot and re-installed the Realtek audio driver and once again my speakers no longer played sound so I just repeated the process I explained earlier and once again my speakers worked."

Vl. Combo Headset Jacks -- an explanation of all-in-one jacks

Dell is now putting "combo" jacks in many of the laptop models. A combo jack combines the function of a mic jack and a headphone jack into a single jack socket. Here is what you can and cannot use with a combo jack.

> You can use a smart phone type of headset.

A headset is a device that combines a microphone and a pair of headphones into a single device. Smart phone headsets combine the mic & the headphone plugs into a single 3.5mm plug with 4 segments (a conventional plug has only 3 segments). A plug with 4 segments (a TRRS plug) looks like this:

> You can also use conventional headphones that have a 3.5mm 3 segment plug (a TRS plug). A 3 segmented plug looks like this:

> You cannot use the combo jack for stereo line-in recording. It only is capable of mono input.

> You cannot use a conventional computer mic that has a 3.5mm TRS (3 segmented) plug. You might be able to use a conventional mic with an adapter cable. One such cable is sold under the name Headset Buddy and looks like this. Notice the 4 segmented plug.:

Another brand of adapter is made by StarTech. We have received conflicting reports about headset adapters. They seem to work with some laptops but not for others, so buy at your own risk. Headsetbuddy.com has a 30 day return policy and a 1 year guarantee on their products. They pay the return shipping if the adapter is defective. The adapters are also available through amazon.com.

Vll. Communication Headphones

Communication Headphones (aka Independent R.T.C. Headphones) is a feature in some of the laptop models that allow you to hear "communication audio" (Skype or game chat) through the headphones, while regular audio (music or game sounds) continues to play through the laptop's speakers.

In Dell laptop models with IDT audio, on the Playback tab of the Sounds properties you would see Speakers and Headphones. If you were to right click on the Headphones, to open the context menu, you could make the headphones the default Communication device.

In much older Dell laptops with IDT audio, the Communication Headphones were named "Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones".

When IDT went out of the consumer audio business, Dell switched to Realtek.  In most models with Realtek, if you open the Playback tab of the Sounds properties, you only have one listing that combines both speakers and headphones, with no option in the context menu to make the headphones into the communication device.

If you install the Windows native audio driver in place of the Realtek driver, you should get back the option. In this screen shot from a Latitude with Windows 7, "Speakers" is listed twice, where the 2nd is the headphones jack of the dock that the laptop is on.

The problem with using the Windows native driver is that, in most versions of it, it only supports the laptop's internal microphone, and not the external mic jack.
