I had the same exact issue. I re installed the driver and I still had the same problem for the Dell Studio 1558.
Solution: Its a hardware issue. I ordered a mouse pad cable and mouse pad buttons and replaced them myself. I bought the parts off of ebay for about $15. I then went to youtube and followed step by step instructions to replace the touch pad and buttons...type" dell studio 1558 touch pad replacement" and the video will show in the results. It took about an hr to do. I hope this helps.

Welcome to the Community. If your are under warranty contact Dell Technical Support for help on reseating the touchpad cable.
Steps to reseat your touchpad cable. I do not recommed this if your under warranty.

After reseating the touchpad cable, try reinstalling the toucpad drivers off the Dell Support Site.
