Dell Latitude 5420 i5-1135G7 - PCIe Gen 4 support?
Hi folks!
I am curious if the Dell Latitude 5420 with an i5-1135G7 intel CPU supports the PCIe Gen 4 SSDs?
According to the docs, the computer supports only the Gen 3 ones:
● One M.2 2230, Gen 3 PCIe x4 NVMe, Class 35 SSD (slot 1)
● One M.2 2280, Gen 3 PCIe x4 NVMe, Class 40 SSD (slot 1)
● One M.2 2280, Gen 3 PCIe x4 NVMe, Class 40 SSD, Self-encrypting drive (slot 1)
but in the Storage specifications table, there is the following record:
M.2 2280, Class 40 solid-state drive Gen 4 PCIe x4 NVMe Up to 2 TB

It will support up to 1 TB supports the same interface

Really hope Dell can give an answer. I've got one with an SN530. And I'm contemplating between a 970 Evo Plus and a SN850.a difference of about $65 between the two.

The Latitude 5420 has a release date of January, 2021, and I believe that it should support Gen-4 NVMe drives. That being said, I have a Latitude 7490 (three years old now) and I installed a Samsung 970 EVO Plus. I heartily recommend that drive; it's fast, works very well in my laptop, and besides, has a five year warranty.

I have a Latitude 5420 with i7 1185G7.
@Nirmo, the Samsung 970 Evo plus is not a Gen4 drive it is Gen 3 and works well. it is a PCI express gen3 x4 drive. and the maximum theoretical data transfer rate is 32 GT/s. On the other hand, the PCI Express Gen 4 X4 has double the speed. which is 64 GT/s.
I also tried the Samsung 980 pro drives, which are Gen4 x4. but I can only get Gen3 connection and the speed. I have the latest bios and the drivers.
for consideration, The CPU itself supports Gen4 and has Gen4 PCI express lines. But it seems like Dell's motherboard design does not have it and we have to use downgraded speeds, I don't understand why they are selling the gen 4 drives with extra money and the laptop does not even support the gen4.
If I am wrong please dell engineers, teach me how to enable Gen4 on this laptop.

Is there any update on this trouble? Is the 5420 compatible with Gen 4 NVME PCIe SSD?

Dell's Latitude 5420 Setup and Specifications page, lists support for only Gen 3 drives:
Your computer supports one of the following configurations:
On that same page, "Table 1. Storage specifications" also lists only Gen 3 drives. You can install a Gen 4 drive, but it will run at Gen 3 speed.

Hi Filbert,
unfortunately, Dell is still selling gen4 drives which you can see on the Dell latitude 5420 configuration page. Dell Latitude 5420 Configuration Page. And yes with extra money. The problem is I figured out once I checked the chipsets, Dell is using an older generation chipset on the 5xx0 series because one generation older chipset, still supports the 11th gen CPUs. On the other hand, things are different on the 7xx0 series because in 7420 they are using the new generation chipset that supports 11th gen CPUs and has a gen4 PCIe M2 socket. Unfortunately, Dell is selling a drive with the computer as an option which you can not benefit from. On the other hand, if you want to use the speeds your CPU supports, you need to buy more premium models with extra cash. This is impossible if we consider these laptops are business oriented and bought in bulk by the companies.
