m17 R3, Linux install

I'm thinking about wiping my drive and installing Linux. I'm confused on the warranty side. Will it void my warranty if I install Linux?

Hi @Genaker welcome to this user to user discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Removing the rear cover will not void the Dell warranty. Dell expects users to install different Storage and RAM cards.

The Dell warranty covers the as delivered configuration. If system needs to be returned for repair, it should be in the as delivered configuration. If you modify the system, you can ask Dell to change warranty to cover the new or swappable change of operating system, but Dell are under no obligation to accept any modifications or provide technical support.

A good way forward is to create and swap in a different NVMe OS(C:) boot drive that has the Linux operating system. There are other options, but this is an easy solution that retains access to the Data drive, that can be used to share your personal files, for both Windows and Linux.

@Genaker  You definitely won't void your warranty, but Linux is not supported on Alienware systems, and I've seen multiple threads about Linux installation attempts on multiple Alienware systems, and people seem to encounter problems that make Linux an impractical option.  Maybe this particular system will do better.  But you should not expect any assistance from Dell to get Linux working, and if you ever have an issue that you think might be related to a hardware problem, Dell Support might make you reinstall Windows to perform diagnostics or other tests there before they will provide warranty coverage.

Install Linux Alongside Windows.

Otherwise you will not get support.

Dell does not support Any Linux on any Model if it did not come from Dell with Linux Pre installed.

There is support for Linux but its not free.
