I have a G870 cpu installed in my 7010, are there any cpu upgrade paths available?

The memory you already have should be ok, it's 1600MHz DDR3. The existing heatsink/fan assembly should be ok too, the TDP (thermal design power) of the G870 is 65W as is the TDP of the i5.

The 7010 has an Intel Q77 Express chipset which supports the following CPUs:

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/Q77_Express.html

The highest rated CPU that Dell shipped with the 7010 was the Intel I7-3770S so just about anything from that list should be compatible. If you are going to go ahead with an upgrade, please make sure to update the BIOS beforehand.

Thanks, found an i5 3570T at a good price but its says on the specs,

Supported memory: DDR3-1333 / DDR3-1600

My memory installed is 16Gb made up of 4x:

Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C-PB NO AA - 4GB 2RX8 PC3-12800U-11-12-B1 RAM

Would my memory work or would I have to purchase newer faster memory?

Also could I use the original cpu fan and heat sink with the i5

I have a 7010. I upgraded it to BIOS A20 and installed Intel Core i7-3770S 3.1 GHz Desktop CPU/Processor SR0PN. I can confirm that this upgrade works. I have a video card installed and, after the upgrade, I was not getting video. I had to plug into the onboard video to see the *System Halted* notification, plug back into my video card, and reboot to regain display. It has been working flawless every since. I hope that this helps. I did not have to update the fan/heatsink and it is staying within limits (I use this machine mostly for video rendering).

Non dell fan or removed thermal sensor will mean it will shut down to prevent overheating.

You CANNOT USE 4th gen CPU in a 7010.

Use a 3rd gen i5 or i7. Why would you bother with a 2nd gen cpu?

Yes you can! 2nd gen and 3rd gen Intel are compatible with the socket.

What is the best processor which this Optiplex 7010 could accommodate?

@Ratana Super User Dell

Better to invest in real gpu and at least 4th Gen CPU on system that has at least TPM 1.2
