dell optiplex 7090 tower psu upgrade

I want to upgrade this tower with a more powerful gpu and I want to buy the seasonic focus spx psu for it. my problem is I need a 24 pin to 6 pin connector to power the mobo. I found this connector but I am not sure it will work with my model since its newer and has an 11th gen cpu.

thank you for reading my problem ^^

I heard brad waking me up.  you got the correct adapter for 7090.

7090 and 7080 use same psu interchangeable with XPS 8940.  all have 6+4+4 pin.  by this logic, if sfx + adapter works for 8940, it will definitely work for 7090.

8940 user onefunkydude had validated Amazon 24-6 pin adapter, “I used the adapter COMeap 24 Pin to 6 Pin ATX PSU Power Adapter Cable for Dell Motherboard with 6 Pin Port 13.3-inch(34cm) on amazon and it works fine."

caveat from same user "I still don't recommend this as the PSU stays on after shutdown and requires you to flip the switch for it to turn off. Also, the cable management is still bad"

Seasonic focus spx psu will not fit in a 7090.  Best bet for PSU upgrade options, check out the Optiplex 7090 Spec Sheet.pdf.

By the way, the 7090 is not a full size mini tower.  They shrunk a bit.

from what I have measured it seemed like I could fit the spx psu. here is a picture of the tower from inside. I think there is enough room to let it sit there loosely. if you know a better fit psu I would greatly appreciate it. and if the connector i mentioned would work. I have spent hours looking for a good psu and measuring the inside to make sure it will fit.WhatsApp Image 2022-08-14 at 9.52.39 PM.jpeg

It would help to know why you want the PSU upgrade - is it for a particular GPU?

Other than that, I'm going to let @redxps630 finish answering if he wants to.  Red is more adept with pulling up PSU sizes than I am.

Is that your current video card in the photo above?  RTX 3070 is 9.5' long and is 220w requiring a 12-pin connector..  Safest bet is the Dell 500w PSU that's meant for the 7090.  Aftermarket PSU's often boast total power, but can skimp on the 3.3v/5v rails as compared to Dell PSU's.

For reference for anyone reading this the RTX 3070 is listed on the spec sheet.

sorry I should have mentioned before what gpu I am putting in my system. well I already have a 3070 which also need a psu to power it on(since the corrent psu is a 270w and doesn't even have a PCIE connectors). but I am also thinking of the upgradability path when the new 4000 series drop. I hope this clear things more. I really want to make this build work.

I can't check it.  Tapping the link wants to change my Amazon to a different country.  I can't do that since it's a little difficult to change it back.  Amazon links connect to my Amazon app rather than just go online.

Could you upload screengrabs of the PSU and at least one of those including the description and/or part number?

Thanks, bradthetechnut

this is the psu EVGA - Products - EVGA 650 B5, 80 Plus BRONZE 650W, Fully Modular, EVGA ECO Mode, 5 Year Warranty, Compact 150mm Size, Power Supply 220-B5-0650-V1 - 220-B5-0650-V1

I am not sure this would work.  It has one EPS 8 pin (4+4) but 7090 needs two identical cpu 4 pin.  the second 4 pin of EPS is not identical to the first 4 pin which is cpu.  thus EPS 8 pin is not equivalent to 2x cpu 4 pin.

it is also not SFX so would not fit 7090 tower space for psu.

Thanks to @redxps630 for that link above.

Hi @PotatoSalad101,

With the 650w EVGA B5 PSU, the 3.3v/5v rails would be undercut a little with only 120w.  You would have to use it externally, but it doesn't look like it would meet your needs.

If you did go external with a PSU, then I'd strongly suggest the EVGA 700w BR PSU.  It has the 2x8-pin connectors and 150w on the 3.3v/5v rails.  The B5 version also has the 2x8-pin connectors, but only 100w on the aforementioned rails.

Above is the specs for the 650w EVGA B5 PSU.

Above is the specs for the 700w EVGA BR PSU.

As noted before in this thread, a full-size PSU will not fit in the 7090 MT.  Also remember GPU's also borrow from one or both of the 3.3v/5v rails.

I'm sorry for sounding naive but I'm new in the pc world, if there are internal PSUs from 500+ link me some options so I can get a better idea, and I would like to know what makes a PSU compatible with both the optiplex 7090 and RTX 3070 thanks for your help. if you have resources that will help me learn more about PCs guide me please, like for an example you said the PSU I linked is a full sized one, is the one inside optiplex called a compact size one or?

Re: what makes a PSU compatible with both the optiplex 7090 and RTX 3070

basic online psu calculator estimates for i7-11700, rtx 3070, sata/nvme ssd, dvd, which are standard 7090 spec.

Load Wattage: 397 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 447 W

even for max spec i7-11700k or i9-11900k

Load Wattage: 452 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 502 W

Dell 500w oem psu is able to handle typical.real world scenario.

Hi @redxps630,

@PotatoSalad101 also seemed to want to know if there's a technical term for the PSU size inside a 7090 MT.  I think the general term is slim, but don't remember technical term if there's one.
