From RAID-6 to RAID-5
Our PE r740xd has a RAID-6 disk group setup.
We would like to convert it into a RAID-5 because we are running out of space, and we thought that using a spare disk from the RAID-6 could help us by converting the said RAID type.
We always see OMSA (thru this forum and internal suggestions within our group) as a tool to help resolve our concern.
But of course, we are fearing of losing a lot of data if we convert RAID-6 to RAID-5.
Also, we are not considering any plan converting the RAID type by erasing RAID-6 and creating RAID-5 from the same disk group.
Can you please help confirm if that is the case or otherwise?
Thank you.

You may be able to reconfigure the RAID 6 to RAID 5. It is not, by design, data-destructive, so you should be able to reconfigure on the fly without data loss. However, you have no business doing this if you don't have a backup of the data.
If you don't have a backup, then you should put ALL your plans on hold and focus on a backup strategy first.
You can find the Reconfigure option in the drop-down menu of Available Tasks for your RAID 6 on the OMSA > Storage > PERC > Virtual Disk page.

In general, a RAID 6 configuration offers better data protection and fault tolerance than RAID 5. However, RAID 6 dual parity requires more time to rebuild lost data as it will be using parity data from two different storage drives.

But also, as beeram started to say, RAID 5 will give you more space, but it is less robust than RAID 6. If you are using SPINNING SATA disks that are larger than 2TB, then you probably shouldn't use RAID 5.

Noted on this.
I just got confused, though.

Sorry, but I don't see the point if I need to have backup first yet reconfiguring from RAID-6 to RAID-5 is not data-destructive.
Please guide me more. Thank you.

Hello Migration takes days and days. If the power goes out during, you will lose your data since the VD is on degrade.

You don't have to do a backup / restore. You can reconfigure on the fly without destroying data. MEANING, it is not DESIGNED to destroy data. It is DESIGNED to run while up and without destroying data...
BUT you would be stupid to do an operation like that without a backup. In fact, you would be stupid to run the server at ALL without a backup. JUST IN CASE! That is what a backup is for. Like Young said, it takes DAYS to complete (depending on the size of your drives), and a lot can happen in that time.
