How to update firmware of PowerEdge R510 or repair

Hello. Our poweredge R510 has the amber light on. After running diagnostics, it had 2 errors. One was a "System Firmware -Critical Interrupt Sensor (PCIE FATAL Err) Bus Fatal Error" and the other one is "Processor sensor (Status) IERR 'CPU2'".

From my research of the 2 errors, it seems recommendation is to try updating the firmware to see if it helps. I do see that it has an outdated firmware, but have been unable to update it. I have tried running the EXE from the Windows Server and it gives me an error that the RBU method failed. I tried copying the PERC file to a USB and running from the BIOS and it could not find the file. I tried Dell Repository manager but it seems this server is too old. I tried Dell SUU (Server Update Utility) and Rufus could not burn it to a USB. Just pasting the file onto the USB did not work either to boot from. How do I update the firmware? Also, what can the errors be if the firmware update does not help? Thank you.

Hi @aazar78,

Try using the Lifecycle method of updating firmware, https://dell.to/3JCwvRS. Please use FAT32 format on the USB.

Try updating the Lifecycle and BIOS at staged updates. For example if the BIOS version is 1.9, update it to 1.10. Movement upgrade parallel with Lifecycle and BIOS. It's recommended not to update firmware of Lifecycle to the latest then move to BIOS.

Hello and thank you for your response. I have already tried that method. It tells me that the file is not found. It has a text box to enter in the location. The file is in the root of the flash drive, so I should not need to put anything there as long as it has the USB selected above it? I might be putting the wrong file? I put the BIOS update file from the support website. What would be the correct files?

aazar78,

Would you confirm what revision you are on with the BIOS and iDrac, as I wanted to verify they aren't really far back, as jumping too many updates or getting the BIOS and iDrac too far apart can cause damage. So I wanted to check on that first, after that another option to update would be to download Server Update Utility and Repository Mgr, with those you can extract the SUU catalog to a custom ISO you create with RM, to which you can boot to in order to update.

Let us know.

Thank you for your reply. I have BIOS version 1.12 and iDRAC firmware version 2.85.04.I have tried the Repository manager, but R510 is not included in the list of devices in it. I read it is too old. I tried the SUU file but was unsure how to use it. Rufus could not burn it onto a USB, and the platform update thing in Lifycyle could not find it if it is just on a USB.

Hi @aazar78,

Let's try updating LCC/iDRAC first before moving on to BIOS 1.13.

Try downloading the update package: ESM_Firmware_KPCCC_WN32_2.92_A00.EXE https://dell.to/3mXFaW0 and copy it to USB (FAT32). Check if Lifecycle update method (the link I provided) would be able to see the file in the USB. If you do have alternate USB drive, try that too.

Thank you. However, it says "catalog file not found". I tried on different drives and also made sure they are FAT32.

Hi @aazar78,

Could you check your Lifecycle Controller's firmware, what's the version?

I'm unsure if it's because of the error, that causes you unable to update the firmware, the various methods that you have used.

Thank you for your response. I believe we are on Lifecycle controller version 1.75

Hello aazar78,

Give this a try. Copy the BIOS 1.14.0 windows .exe file to the root of USB drive and rename it something short like BIOS.exe

Connect the USB drive to server with server off.

Power up  press Platform Update > Launch Platform Update   > select USB and type file name BIOS.exe

I recommend a 4 or 8G USB. If it doesn't recognize it you may try a different manufacture usb drive. Some don't work well with the LCC>

Thank you. I successfully updated the BIOS to 1.5.4. However, I did not use the one you sent. That one gave me an error stating it is not verified by Dell. The one I used was from the support page and the file was a PERC file. Would I update lifecycle controller in same way? Preferably it would be like the newer one where it can connect to the internet and download updates itself. Would you know about the error messages for the hardware?

Hi @aazar78,

I'm surprised that you used firmware file for PERC to update BIOS. But good to know it's updated. You can refer to the link for online update (the video below for 11G), but instead of ftp.dell .com, use downloads.dell.com.

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000128133/poweredge-server-lifecycle-controller-update

Here's an explanation of the error, IERR: https://dell.to/40t6c66
