R730 server with abnormal fan speed

Hi,

I've a whole new R730 from Dell and just start to power on today.

Factory default specifications from Dell are as follows,

x2 E5-2620v3, x2 SSD HDD, x4 SAS HDD, x8 16GB RAM

x1 Intel X710 DP 10Gb DA/SFP+, + I350 DP 1Gb Ethernet

x1 NVIDIA GRID K1 GPU, x2 1100W power supply

After system complete POST and begin booting from first boot device, the fan speed will always up to 9200+ rpm. Whether there's OS installed on R730 or not. It's normal fan speed or it's a flaw product ?

Another strange issue is after I installed a NIC which is removed from my R720 into this new R730 server.

The whole R730 system fan speed will always up to 15000+ rpm.

The NIC model installed is Intel Ethernet I350 quad-port 1Gb server adapter.

In my personal opinion, it's not normal fan speed absolutely!

Would you please tell me, how to solve these two issues ?

Vrock,

Ensure that you have all the fans installed and that the server has up to date BIOS and iDRAC firmware. Drain the system flea power by unplugging all power supply cables and then pressing and holding down the power button for about 15 second. Now, power back the system on.

Thanks Robert's kindly replay.

This R730 server has the latest firmware updated via SUU, and be checked x6 fans are working fine.

After draining the system flea power and rebooting, the fan speed is down from 9200+ rpm to 7200+ rpm.

Q1:What's the proper fan speed of this R730 with these specification as follows, 'cause I don't think it should always at 7200+ rpm without any workload.

Q2:The same situation had been happened. After re-plugging Intel PRO/1000 ET Quad Port Gigabit NIC (Dell 0HM9JY) into this R730, the fan speed will be raising from 7200+ rpm to 15000+ rpm, like jet plane.

The BMC/iDRAC is designed to increase the minimum fan threshold speed based on the system configuration and ambient temperature. The more components you install, especially a video card, the higher the minimum fan threshold will be. For R730 with GPGPU installed, the minimum fan speed will be around ~8500 RPM and with NIC it is bound to increase further.

Check if there's any 3rd party PCIe card installed in the chassis. The 13G fan speed will be automatically increased when it detect 3rd party PCIe card based on determination of bus width, wattage etc. If you think the 3rd party cards do not need additional cooling such as ones that have their own fan,there's IPMI raw command available to disable this default fan response. Otherwise at the moment, based on your information the system is working as intended.

Q1:Due to Robert's answers, it's been solved via draining the system flea power. The whole system fan speed is 7200+ rpm and being 8200+ rpm after 1-hour.

Q2:There's no 3rd party PCIe card installed in this R730. I Just wanna install Intel PRO/1000 ET Quad Port Gigabit NIC (Dell 0HM9JY) into this R730, but the fan speed will be raising from 7200+ rpm to 15000+ rpm.

It means Dell 0HM9JY is been recognized as 3rd party PCIe card via Dell R730 ??? 

And it should run "uld_disabled" via IPMI for solving this issue ?!

The part number 0HM9JY, for your PCIe card does not show on the Dell validated parts list and as such it is recognized as a 3rd party card. Though not validated, it may work fine. The GPU, 3rd party cards and other undetected PCIe cards are responsible for substantial increase of fans' RPM with a minimum of about ~8500RPM.

If you think the 3rd party cards do not need additional cooling such as ones that have their own fan, yes you may run the IPMI command. However, the corresponding decrease in the RPM may not be that appreciable as before.

I have similar ploblem. After insert Sangoma A104 card in Dell PowerEdge R730xd fun speed > 16000 rpm. How can i get ipmi commands for decrease fan speed?

HI - I know this thread is old, but I've figured it out and gotten my fans down from 16K+ RPM down to 5500 RPM
