Dell TL2000: Exchange drive LTO4 to LTO5 or 6?

Good morning,

is it possible to "just" exchange an older LTO4 drive with a newer LTO5 or 6 drive?

Is it possible to have LTO 5 and 6 mixed?

Thank you very much.

I would have thought that I should update the drive's firmware before installing in the library but did know that the library must be updated.

Thank you very much.

We upgrade TL2000 from LTo4 to Lto6 years ago. There was not a single issue from the HW perspective.  You should upgrade the FW for the TL2000 first and when placing the new drives in upgrade these FW as well.

Another question:

I have an IBM LTO6 drive which originally was installed in a Quantum Superloader which is now defective.

The drive has the latest IBM/Quantum firmware as far as I can see it.

Will it work in the TL2000 if I install the Dell firmware for LTO6 and upgrade the library afterwards?

Thank you very much.

The TL2000/4000 is a "IBM total storage" branded device with a dell sticker on the front

I am not sure if the FW for the drives is the same or what happend if you use non "dell" lto drives. We brought our upgrade drives from dell. For sure you can use the ibm test drive tool.

I would expect that the  drives are a little bit different and its more likely that it wont work.

About the FW upgrade for the libraray. It doesnt hurt if you do it prior.
I dont know if you use a stone aged version of a TL2000 which is dated befor LTO6 exist. So i suggest do update it first and than start playing around with the drives.
