MD 1200 showing fraction of storage space on new drives

Hi,

I have added 4 x 1.8TB drives to my MD 1200. When I go into the Server Administrator, the drives are only recognised as 200GB?

They are 1.8TB SAS 10k 2.5" 12G 4Kn E/C 96WJT

These are the drive specs

https://www.etb-tech.com/dell-1-8tb-sas-10k-2-5-12g-512e-hard-drive-0wrrf-new-pull.html?gclid=CjwKCA...

Any ideas why they are showing up with such low capacity?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Hi @mikeprag,

You wrote 1.8TB SAS 10k 2.5" 12G 4Kn E/C 96WJT, is 96WJT the DPN# on the drive? Just to check if this is a Dell certified drive, it should have a DPN#.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for the email...According to OSA, they are Dell and

Product ID = HUC101818CS4204

Part Number =  TH096WJT125675C401AVA00

See below screenshot - Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi, it is a very interesting situation for me, which PERC card are you using and can you check if it is up to date. Also please keep MD1200 up to date. It occurred to me that maybe the PERC card might be reporting the status incorrectly to OMSA. You're not checking from within the RAID, right, if you are checking from within the RAID, it will look like the disk with the least capacity and speed included in the RAID. You can try restarting OMSA services https://dell.to/3PgQkPy

Press Windows+R key to open the Run window and enter "services.msc".

On the Services screen, check the following OMSA services are on the list.

DSM SA Connection Service
DSM SA Data Manager
DSM SA Event Manager
DSM SA Shared Services
Right-click each service name and select Restart from the displayed menu.
There is no specific order to restart.

I am not a Dell insider, but this is because your perc card & MD1200 combo does not support 4kndrives, I guess.. Apparently, MD1200 can support 4kn drives if the perc card is "modern", but pre H810 probably is  not going to get you there.

And, you are using an MD1220 , and not md1200, if you are using 2.5" drives.

oh, and the 1.8TB becomes about 200GB because you will get 1/8 of the capacity because  your perc card thinks each sector is 512 bytes even though they are technically 4096 bytes .

Thanks for the reply and that seems to make sense to me. It's actually a MD 1200 but I have 3.5 -> 2.5" converters on the trays. It is a Perc H800 so your theory seems correct. Don't suppose there is any firmware update on either H800 or MD1200 that will make this work?

Thanks in advance for the reply

Mike

Hi @mikeprag,

I have checked the DPN# 96WJT is not compatible with MD1200. Unfortunately, firmware update will not help the architecture support for the drive. You can refer to this page for supported drives by MD1200: https://dell.to/3l4PLdV

Thanks for that.

Can I just ask....If I pick one of the 10K 1.2TB drives from that list which are all 2.5", will it work ok if I use a 3.5" tray with 2.5" converter? Can't see why not but just want to check

Thanks

Mike

Hi @mikeprag,

I can't find any related info if it is not compatible mixture with 3.5" and 2.5". As long as you have the available drive carrier and converter, the drive should be able to be used. I have not tried it myself, but I have tried it on servers. But, you need to be aware that 3.5" does not have 10K RPM. Only 7.2K and 15K. I assume you have 7.2K 3.5" drives, hence you chose 10K 2.5" replacement.
