7920 Flexbay 2 & 3 storage upgrades - Incomplete information being provided by Dell

I want to add cages 2 & 3 with SATA drives as the 'rear/internal' mounts for a 7920.

Anyone doing any research into this will quickly find it's a total dogs dinner of incomplete/partial information and a seeming lack of willingness for someone at Dell to get to the bottom of it.

The current live Dell page on upgrading storage in a 7920 is this one....

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000146243/upgrading-storage-in-the-dell-precision-5820-7820-7920-tower-workstations

However, the SKUs in that article seem to be referring ONLY to the factory fitted option(s), whereas the article itself (by inference from the Dell linked youtube videos) is showing users how to fit the various options themselves, thus are in effect post factory user installs.

There are already a number of links of the Community forum about this problem.

Nowhere have I been to find definitive information on what the post factory part number options should be and the 575-xxxx part numbers are not even known to the couple of Dell reps I've talked to.

Could someone at Dell please take ownership of this or escalate it to someone who can, the link above should be updated to provide the post factory SKUs or conversely an individual part numbers of ALL the components needed to make up the equivalent of the 575-xxxx part numbers should be listed, after all the items do show their component breakdowns, but only in non specific language terms without the corresponding part numbers.

These are not inexpensive workstations and if someone like myself has now spent three days trying to get to the bottom of this then I would have to proffer the problem is in the information Dell is (or more accurately isn't) providing.

This isn't Rocket Science guys and you need to do better.

This is user to user forum.  You can certainly get help from forum members with the knowledge on the subject.

Could someone at Dell please take ownership of this or escalate it to someone who can.  I think it is up forum Mods to determine if your inquiry would be escalate or forward to the appropriate personnel, post Sales and Spare Parts, in this case.  I think that you would get better result in finding the answers from doing your own research.

I remember that I had posted the parts number for the rear flexbay in some old threads and some other members also posted their findings as well.  One user managed to purchase the kit directly from Dell.  You may get better result by calling around than just waiting for their response in here.

I've been looking around as well, but honestly was hoping a mod would pick it up as the research I've done so far has not been fruitful at all.

There are instances where some sellers are offering items that could be correct, but they themselves are unable to say with certainty exactly which model they're selling (motherboard connects or pci card connects for example).

I'm sure you can understand it's quite frustrating that something that really should be quite simple is so ridiculously complicated.

I think they (Mods) would if they could.  I know they have access to parts catalog and I saw many postings on several requests.  From PSU to memory, from drives caddy to thunderbolt cards.  But nothing definitive was offered on these expansion kits.  Knowledge base and instructional is all you get.

As for sourcing parts from third party, you may find something available in US but you won't get much luck when searching anywhere else.  Still, wish you best of luck sourcing your parts.

If you want to install those components you should chat with Dell Representative and give them the reference number to get a quote. I have recently upgraded my workstation with two of those options.

I would recommend to buy this from Dell because the cables, bezels  and connections should match the headers on the computer and the motherboard. The packages come with all the necessary components.

Now if you still want to buy aftermarket components, you may look into ICY Dock website: https://www.icydock.com/storage_buying_guide/dell_workstations/Dell_Precision_7000_series_storage_buying_guide.pdf

Not necessary cheaper but has options.
