Updates 2/16/14 - EAM
Caveat: In listing EAM, I'm hoping there's still a free version available. If this is purely a paid/trial product, I am NOT suggesting anyone partake.
Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1.0.40 is a maintenance update for improved performance and protection.
Improvements:
- Adds support for detecting malicious Chrome and Firefox extensions.
- Adds general support of newest Firefox and Chrome developer versions.
- Adds support for detecting possibly unwanted system settings.
- Improved infection categorization.
- Internal optimizations to reduce the number of required signatures and memory consumption.
- Removed Outlook integration as it became obsolete for safety.
- Removed cookie scan as it became obsolete for safety.
- Enhanced error logging routines.
- Problem with Security Wizard reappearing after completed installation – fixed.
- Bug with filenames in email notifications – fixed.
- Several potential memory corruptions and memory leaks – fixed.
- Problem with handling of specific network shares – fixed.
- Problem with files being occasionally detected as folders and folders as files – fixed.

Indeed, one can still install this version of EAM as a freeware on-demand scanner with malware removal capability, but no real-time protection. I just downloaded/installed EAM 8.1.0.40 as freeware.
But it is not obvious how to do this, as Emsisoft no longer offers a Free version download directly from their website like they used to. The default download now includes the trial version, which includes a 30 day full version trial that includes real-time AV/AM protection. Obviously those that are happy with their current AV don't want this because of conflict concerns. The trial version will revert to the free version unless purchased after the trial expires, but many will not want "duelling AVs" for the duration of this trial period.
To install only the EAM Freeware, download the program from http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/
During the installation process, the installer will offer to install the full AV trial by default. To avoid this, at one point, you will be offered the options "30 days free trial", or ""I have a license key", and in much smaller print below, "Freeware mode (scanner only, no protection)." Choose the latter option, and complete the installation.
Updates and on-demand Quick scans continue to take less than a minute.
