5402 2nd SSD

  • Hello, I have a 40wh battery in my vostro 5402, can I fit SSD in second M.2 port? If not, is it just because the speaker takes too much space, or is there software/hardware issue with motherboard that is preventing me from doing so?
  • Pls also make your answer in public forum reply so that anyone coming from Google doesn't have to go through your non functioning forum registration(no activation mail after 1 hour, i got through with password reset)

rottenn,

I spoke to a level 2 engineer.  He  says you can use it for optane memory but, we have not tested other SSDs here on this slot for 40Wh battery.

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

rottenn,

Your computer supports one of the following configurations:
  • M.2 drive x1
  • M.2 drive x2
The primary drive of your computer varies with the storage configuration. For computers with two M.2 drives, the SSD-1 M.2 drive is the primary drive.

NOTE:
Vostro 5402 supports the following storage configurations:

Manual also states that:

NOTE: If you have ordered a 3-cell (40 Wh) battery configuration, your computer can only support one SSD in M.2 slot one. M.2 slot two is only available if you have ordered an Intel Optane storage.

So can just buy M.2 2280, PCIe NVMe, Intel Optane Storage and install it?

So i assume it is either of these:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/details/memory-storage/optane-memory/optane-memory-h10-solid-state-storage.html

Since there is no picture, i don't how will it fit in the slot, there is speaker in the space right under it, can you look into manual?

rottenn,

It is the configuration you ordered.  You have a 40wh battery so the manual states  If you have ordered a 3-cell (40 Wh) battery configuration, your computer can only support one SSD in M.2 slot
one. M.2 slot two is only available if you have ordered an Intel Optane storage. So,  yes the speaker takes too much space in the configuration that you purchased.

Hmmm, this is getting nowhere. Smaller SSD would fit(for example the one I have in slot 1). Is it possible to get more information, or do I really need to get SSD and install it to really know for sure?

After confirming it is possible here, You replied in PM that it is probably not possible using same note from manual I wrote earlier. So lets stick to original question:

If not, is it just because the speaker takes too much space, or is there software/hardware issue with motherboard that is preventing me from doing so?

NOTE: If you have ordered a 4-cell (53 Wh) battery configuration, your computer may support a 2230 solid-state drive or a 2280 solid-state drive or an Intel Optane storage in M.2 slot two.
NOTE:  If there is only one solid-state drive in the configuration you ordered, you can install another solid-state drive in the other M.2 slot. However, you may need a solid-state drive bracket (sold separately) to install the additional solid-state drive.
The system will have only one M.2 slot if it is shipped with a 40Wh battery... The only expection to have 2 slots is to have a factory shipped Intel optane card..
It's just one SSD as it is not shipped with optane card or a 53Whr battery
the third point is continuation of the second one..

I have 40Wh battery and second M.2 port that is connected motherboard.

Dell Vostro 5402 (PN: RGX6Y), 40Wh

- to put Dell SSD to "second" M.2 slot (without screw)
- to put a new SSD to the original M.2 slot (with screw)
- to close cover

It isn't a very nice solution, but it works and no invasive modification of parts is needed!

Hello

Because no further comment were made on your question, I can tell you I faced the same problem. I tested port 2 with an SSD and it worked just perfect, but I had to remove the speakers set from the laptop. As per the owner service manual the 40w battery configuration uses a different kind of speaker for accomodating the requirements for the 53w battery thus leaving space for even an M2 2280 ssd. I bought the support for the ssd at port 2. Now I have a laptop with no speaker and using bluetooth earbuds. I am now looking for a set of speakers for the 53w model

This Vostor laptop 5402 has raid option , I have too tried to install secondary ssd but am too facing the same issue the speaker part stucks.

The additional braket for ssd I have purchased from online amazon similar to the 1st sdd but no use.
