XPS 8300, memory upgrade from 6GB
I have 6 gb Memory dell xps 8300 want to increase memory should I buy another 6GB or 16 GB that won't cause any conflict. thanks

Max 8300 can support is 16=4x4 gb ddr3.
your 6gb may be two sticks 4+2 or three sticks 3x2. not sure speed. Is it 10600 or 12800?
if 4+2, can buy another 4+2 of same speed matching the original.
cleanest upgrade though is to get 4x4 gb identical sticks.

If your memory was original factory ram from Dell, then use service tag to look up system spec. It will tell you DP/N of memory from which you can find out speed.
you can also physically remove memory to inspect for spec.
removing or adding memory would not delete your data on hdd.

How to find if its 10600 or 12800. I looked in System Information don't see the speed. Is 4x4 gb- four slots/sticks. Will my PC lose info or have to reinstall software etc. I will check to see how many sticks installed. Will removing memory stick lose programs? thanks

Just wanted to ask if I added an 8gb stick to two 4gb or do I have to add two more 4gb to the 4 slots, to get maximum from memory. I added an 8gb to my 8gb memory PC but the upgraded memory seemed to add just 4gb. In the System Info. it states total Physical memory 12gb. Also, since dual and single rack seem similarly priced, should I get the dual. My PC has 4 slots. Hope this makes sense.

most of the time it is better to have 4 identical 4 gb sticks in the 4 slots to have max 16 gb. If you have two sticks of 4 gb installed already, try to get two additional sticks that are identical. Adding a single 8 gb stick is not a great idea in this context.
