XPS 8500, upgrade to Windows 11?

Can the 2012 XPS 8500 running Windows 10 upgrade to Windows 11?

Going by the 8500 specs that would be No. The CPU is a 3rd generation (you need at least 8th generation) and you do not have TPM 2.0.

While many older system will not be able to install Windows 11 it seems that the current Windows PC Health Check is still a work in progress and some systems that are currently failing the test might indeed be able to install Windows 11 after all. I assume we'll find out more as the release date gets closer.

Here's an interesting read on the subject:

a@ramezan  NO.

List of Dell PCs confirmed capable of being updated to Windows 11 here.  These are the only PCs that Dell will support with Drivers for Windows 11.

If I can only purchase a used Dell ( and I have been using the Dell for many years) what series of laptops and desktops, what is the earliest series of  Dells that have the 8th generation I7 and have TPM 2.0. ?

I think it starts at Alienware Aurora R7, Dell XPS-8930, or Dell OptiPlex with Intel 8th Gen or newer processor (like an Intel i7-8700 ).

Most good refurbishers will already have Windows-11 on there for you if the machine is capable.

But really, I think you might be better off with a new computer.

Here's a link to the PC models that Dell validated for Win 11. Click "Dell Computers tested for upgrade to Win 11" to see the list.

NOTE: unless you're in China, you can ignore the * after a model number, if any.

Doesn't mean other Dell models can't run Win 11, but Dell won't provide support (eg, drivers, etc) for models not on that list.

Can't run on an 8500, no TPM support.

Might be able to get it to work by by-passing that, but I doubt a stock 8500 would perform well.

I kept our XPS8500 'alive' by upgrading RAM, Video card, and installed an SSD for booting. All up to W10. That, to me, is the end of the road.

Wanted to get my wife a new Dell, but after all the problems I've have with the 8940's she's not interested. She might just switch to my backup XPS8700 if the XPS8500 starts to have problems.

The answer to this question is actually Yes. I updated my XPS 8500 to Windows 11 today. The steps are:

1. Make the registry edit described here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ways-to-install-windows-11-e0edbbfb-cfc5-4011-868b-2ce77ac7c70e

2. Download the Windows 11 ISO from here https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

3. Disconnect all external devices except the mouse, keyboard, monitors, and network. Do not skip this or the clean boot step below, otherwise the update will fail during the 2nd reboot with error code 0xC1900101 - 0x4000D and you'll have wasted a lot of time

4. Clean boot into Windows 10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

5. Follow the instructions under the 1st heading here https://www.neowin.net/guides/how-to-install-windows-11-version-23h2-on-unsupported-hardware/

I did an in-place update, which kept all my files, apps, and settings. Took around 2 - 3 hours. In addition to using Known Folder Redirect (KFR), my installation also uses StableBit DrivePool.

1 major warning: if you have any Storage Spaces, makes sure they're backed up to NTFS or some other non-Storage Space or non-ReFS volume. The update nuked 1 of my Storage Spaces (on a different machine) and I wound up having to restore it from a backup.

Otherwise it was a pretty smooth process. Honestly, kudos to Dell for making great hardware that's still very functional at over a decade old.

@josiekat77

One post would have been enough, but 'what' happens and what were you doing?

A 'reboot' from the PC on, or a 'power up' using the power button after it was off?

WHAT do you see, a blank screen or did you see the Dell Logo?

Is your monitor ON? Have you verified on another PC  or switched to a different monitor and get the same 'results'?

Are the LED on the top or the PSU blinking?
