Hard drive not installed

My questionis more so how do I backup files in support os assist if it says hard drive not installed. the thing is it doesnt say anything is wrong with the hard drive just that battery is not working. I want to gain access to the files and back them up I have the extended usb port cord. Does the back up files show up at the support assist screen? does it say scan hardware, backup files and restore system? I only have scan hardware and restore system
