XPS 15 9510, oversaturated color issues

Hey gang,

So once again I purchased another XPS model thinking to myself there is no way they're gonna mess up something that they fixed with my XPS 15 9570 again. Welp, sure enough they've gone and proved me wrong.

Once again, out the box the colors are grotesquely oversaturated with reds being the worst offender. I am a photographer and video editor so accurate color representation is EVERYTHING.

They've included Dell Premier Color app this time around. Although it fixed my issues on my XPS 15 9570 when going from vibrant to sRGB, it does very little to solve the issue on this XPS 15 9510. As before "Vibrant" is the default setting yet now when I click sRGB, it does nothing noticeable to the color space. Pretty much every button has little to no real effect, and Adobe RGB isn't doing much either.

Intel/Nvidia drivers are updated so after the last 3 hours of fiddling around and talking to Dell support I'm at a loss.

Any support would be appreciated.

The solutions provided did not work, can't uninstall video drivers as they are automatically re-installed when I restart. Add to that, there is a faint black haze around the borders of the screen a few millimeters from the border. I don't understand how the same issues users have complained about persist through the last 4 generations of XPS 15 models. As of now I'm glad I still have my 9570 because I am pretty close to returning this defective unit.

Hi Mo S, was this issue ever resolved?  I have just purchased an XPS 15 9510 with the OLED display and have the exact same issue. Color managed applications like photoshop are fine, but any basic windows software such as file explorer, homescreen, lock screen, outlook or photos are way over saturated, especially reds.  I understand this is due to the fact that windows does not take any notice of color profiles, so more of a windows issue than a Dell issue. But, I was hoping I could utilize Dell Premier Color to reduce the color space of the wide gamut display when doing basic windows stuff. However, Premier Color has next to no effect when switching profiles. I will be very disappointed if I have to return this laptop because I cannot find a workaround for this terrible oversaturation.

I purchased an X-Rite i1 Display Pro to use with the Dell PremierColor software, hoping this might improve things.  Unfortunately, when I try to run the Calibration Wizard in the PremierColor software I get an error message saying the calibration device I am using is not supported. I am guessing the problem is that it is no longer possible to buy the i1 Display Pro from X-Rite, they now sell it through Calibrite. It is the exact same device but is now called ColorChecker Display Pro. Sounds like a PremierColor software update is needed.

I calibrated the display directly using the Calibrite software and colors look great in the color managed apps like photoshop, but still totally oversaturated for non managed apps like file explorer folder icons, photos, wallpapers, Office apps etc.  I would therefore still like to use Dell PremierColor to clamp down the color Gamut to sRGB for these non color managed apps. But, as the OP says, Premier Color seems to make no difference to the Gamut.

I will need to contact technical support when I have a few hours to spare to figure out why Dell PremierColor is not doing what it is advertised to do. Very frustrating.

I still have over saturated colors in non-color managed apps on my XPS 15 9510 OLED. Dell PremierColor is not limiting the color gamut of the display to sRGB as it is advertised to do. I have been working with Dell Technical support and tried several potential remedies from engineering which boils down to mainly uninstalling and re-installing drivers and the PremierColor software. Still no resolution.  Will keep this thread updated.

Were you ever able to figure this out? I have tried several methods and nothing has worked for me.

The last response I received from Dell engineering is that Dell PremierColor is working as intended, i.e. it will only change color profiles for color managed apps.  I find this hard to believe, as color managed apps such as photoshop will use the ICC profile to correctly display colors, these apps do not need PremierColor at all.  It is only the non-color managed apps (which is most Windows, Microsoft and most available (non-Adobe) video editors) that need the ability to limit the gamut of the display to sRGB for example.  When I read the PremierColor documentation it definitely implies that it will limit the display gamut for non color managed apps.  I have asked for this latest response to be reviewed again and am waiting for the response. Most wide gamut monitors these days come with color gamut emulation capabilities to address these issues, so it only makes sense that laptops with wide gamut displays also include this capability and Dell PremierColor is positioned by Dell as being able to do this. It is no good selling a "Creator Edition" laptop that cannot be used with 90% of the software that creators use because there is no way to correctly view colors on the built in display.

The XPS engineering team could not replicate the issue in the lab. They have requested to collect your systems for further analysis. You will be provided with a replacement of the same specifications. Please let us know if you are ok in doing this capture/exchange by clicking our DELL-Cares username and sending us a private message. Please reference this thread in your private message to us.

I have the same problem. Brand-new XPS 17 9710.  The reds and oranges are ridiculously over-saturated. How can you ship something that is this<Profanity removed.TOS73>
