XPS 15 9550 versus XPS 13 2-in-1, what's better?

Hi Looking for some advice

I have a 2016 Dell XPS 15 9550 (305 i7, 32GB, 1TB PCIe SSD 4K) that I use for Photoshop/ video editing whilst on the move (prefer desktop for bigger projects) and I use a Samsung Tab S7+ for general surfing video/movie watching when traveling

So, I was thinking of going for an XPS 13 2-in1 instead of using the 2 x devices I have (less bulk when traveling).

My question is how does the new XPS 13 2-in-1 detachable (i7, 16GB, 512GB) compare to my old dell laptop? Mainly from a photo editing perspective. I realize there's less RAM, but being newer the new RAM might be better? And it will have a more up to date chipset. Storage isn't really a problem I can use external/cloud.

just really looking for some comparison advice if possible - last thing I want is to purchase a new device and it not be as good as my old one.

Thanks for reading (and hopefully replying).

Thank you,

Shaunarontis

The two major differences:

1.  The XPS 13 2-in-1 uses a low power CPU that's far less capable than the full-power one in the older XPS 15 (or the current XPS 15 models).  You likely will find the 2-in-1's CPU less than acceptable for photoshop work.

2.  The smaller and lighter the system, the smaller and less capable the thermal management.  There is a full-power XPS 13 (the XPS 9320 or 13 Plus).  The big however is that though the system uses a full-power CPU, it's still so thin and light that user load it's very likely going to throttle back performance to keep temperatures in check.

None of the 13" models have the discrete GPU your XPS 15 no doubt has -- yet another reason why the XPS 13 just is not suited for the workload you intend for it.

You can have either thin/light/portable or the power needed to run a demanding application like Photoshop --- you can't have both in one system, at least not without compromise.

Hi Shaunarontis,

Considering your needs for photo editing while on the move and reducing bulk, the XPS 13 2-in-1 can be a solid choice. Although it has less RAM, newer technologies often optimize performance, and the updated chipset should enhance processing capabilities. However, for resource-intensive tasks like watching World Cup 2023, the XPS 15 9550 with its higher RAM might still outperform the XPS 13 2-in-1. It's essential to assess if the portability and convenience outweigh the slight performance trade-off for your specific use case. Make sure to try out the XPS 13 2-in-1 for yourself or check for detailed benchmarks before making a decision....

Best regards!
