FC630 onboard SATA

Hello,

I have some FC630s that I'd like to use the 2x2.5" drive bays on the front. The BIOS shows an onboard SATA/RAID controller, however it seems like there is some kind of cable or other module that I need to install under the drive cage to make it so the disks show up. I can't seem to find any part number or name for it, and searching seems to only suggest installing a PERC card. What is actually needed for the disks to show up?

Hello,

The Backplane is driven by one controller. You cannot use hardware PERC (H330, H730, H730P) and software S130 at the same time.

Software RAID S130 supports SATA HDD and SATA SSD only.

<F2> System BIOS screen > SATA Settings

Embedded SATA Enables the embedded SATA option to be set to Off, ATA, AHCI, or RAID modes. This option is set to AHCI by default.

Set this to RAID if you are using S130.

No that page did not help, it only tells how to remove parts, not what the parts are called needed to utilize the internal SATA controller on the mother board.

Hi,

Here you see

4. Remove the following:

    1. Hard drives or SSDs

    2. Hard drive or SSD backplane

    3. Hard drive or SSD cage

On the left side, you can choose how to remove these parts.

Again, all that shows is how to remove or install the components. I know how to do that. What I am trying to figure out is what is needed to get the onboard SATA controller (that shows up in the BIOS) to recognize the SSD in the backplane. Is there a separate component that needs to be installed, or is the backplane only able to be used with a PERC card installed? In the BIOS the built in controller shows 8 channels which would indicate that it is supposed to be used with either the 2 x 2.5" SSD cage and the 8 x 1.8" SSD options, however with drives installed into the cages nothing ever shows in the BIOS attached to these channels.

I think you might have solved it, but just so I understand correctly, the backplane can accept both SAS and SATA drives, however the onboard S130 will only detect SATA drives, and if I would like to use SAS drives instead I need to install the PERC card that goes below the drive cage?

My drives are Dell Enterprise Plus Model: HUSMM1616ASS200 which indicate they are SAS and the backplane accepting both types of disks would explain my confusion. If this is correct I will mark your response as the accepted answer.

Thanks!

That is likely the issue.

SAS HDD, SATA HDD, SAS SSD, SATA SSD drives are supported but not on all controllers.
