SAN HQ False Alarm? Critical: The current group firmware () is incompatible with the disk

"Priority Alert ID "Estimated Time Detected" Duration Status Description
Critical 3.8 02/03/2023 06:43 2 m 3 s. Cleared Critical: The current group firmware () is incompatible with the disk firmware on drive 15 for member xxxxxx-eql01. Please contact your Dell support provider. Important disk support information: Model Number-ST3600057SS , Firmware Revision-EN03, and Serial Number-6SLAL6WG"

1. Suddenly saw these red warning this morning saying PS6000XV disks fw EN03 is imcompatible with group fw (v5.2.11), it ran for 2 mins and disabled by itself. Status = Cleared

2. Never had this warning until I've upgraded SANHQ recently from v3 to v3.0.4

3. Checked only disk fw with EN03 having this warning, but not EN01

4. Current EQ FW v5.2.11 with disk FW EN03 and EN01 has been running fine for the past 10 years.

So my conclusion is my recent upgrade of SANHQ is producing a false alarm and I do not need to worry about it right?

Hello,

That is very old EQL firmware and SANHQ software as well.  The FW was released in 2013 and that SANHQ is 2016.  The firmware on the drives is also out of date.

I am glad the alert cleared out eventually.   Each release of SANHQ has a database of drives and firmware revisions supported.

When that version of SANHQ was released I believe the minimum version of supported EQL array firmware was 6.0.x.

    Regards,

Don

Btw, SAN HQ v3.0.x is compatible with EQ FW v5.2.11

Hello,

That's an interesting use case.  One important note, EQL FW less than 6.0.6-H2 had an issue with VMware VMFS where under certain conditions the VMFS volumes had random data written to them.

Also interestihg to run unsupported guest OS's on a hypervisor that old.

  Regards,

Don

Thanks Don.

Yes, client deliberately keeps it that way as they have a limitation of upgrading their ESX 4.1. so in chain reaction, all related software such as EQ FW/Disk FW/SAN HQ/MEM also stay at the last revision on the compatibility chart, not to mention various Poweredge FW. Actually we added a 2nd EQ box PS6100x recently and have to downgrade the software to v5.2.11 as well in order to join the group with PS6000xv.

Anyway, most importantly, the current configuration is very stable and running smoothly ever since 2010, even under heavy loading.

Btw, ESX 4.1 can also run W2K22, 2019 and 2012, proved solid as steel.
