CAPACITY- How to check and reclaim storage space

Whether you are being proactive or you are already getting alerts, the goal of this discussion is help you manage your capacity.

This is a huge and important topic, so we will do it in parts and we will start with the big picture.

First, what are the ways you can view, and in some cases manage, your storage?

We will start with the easiest way- using the various GUI consoles, then in another part we will focus on ssh/cli cmds.

Here are the many ways you can view/manage storage in the GUI consoles:

acm dashboard:

Now lets look at some ssh/cli ways to VIEW capacity:

(If you are using putty, you can go right click at top and select Change Settings and save all output to a file)

ssh to acm as root and run: showfru disk

ssh to Avamar Server as 'admin' user and run:
mccli server show-prop
mccli dd show-prop
capacity.sh --days=30 --top=10
avmaint gcstatus

ssh to Data Domain as system administrator and run:
system show serial
show current alerts
enclosure show all
disk show reliability-data
disk show state
disk show failure history
fi st
df -h
tree list
snapshot list mtree *
filesys clean status
filesys show compression
cloud clean status

To collect a DD Support Bundle using Data Domain UI:
1. Log in to the Data Domain System Manager UI using 'sysadmin'
of the user.
2. Navigate to Maintenance -> Support -> Support Packs
3. Click on the 'Generate Support Package' button.
4. Once the package is created, click on the package link to download
this.

So far we have only VIEWED our capacity.

In the next post we will see how to UNDERSTAND the processes and RECLAIM SPACE.

Next lets see how to UNDERSTAND the processes and RECLAIM SPACE.

Here I will list some good REFERENCES since trying to fit all the details here would not be practical.

But this saves you from needing to search for the better KBs.

BTW, you can use general Avamar and Data Domain KBs when working with IDPA in most cases.

UNDERSTANDING the process:

Outgrowing your current capacity?

Expanding storage:

Here is the minimum and maximum storage available for each model:
Model Configuration Details
DP4400 From 8 TB up to 24 TB
From 24 TB up to 96 TB
DP5300 From 34 TB up to 130 TB
DP5800 From 96 TB up to 288 TB
DP8300 From 192 TB up to 720 TB
DP8800 From 624 TB to 1 PB

References:

See Expanding storage capacity section in IDPA Product Guides located here:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-in/000135863/integrated-data-protection-appliance-idpa-documents

IDPA: How to Expand Storage on DP4400:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000010659/expand-storage-on-dp4400?lang=en

OK so that's a good start on how to manage Capacity.

I may add more from time to time but I hope the community will add anything I may have overlooked and if you ask questions we will do our best to answer.

Hi avijit95,

Sorry for the late reply- I had access issues for a while.

Your question seems to be regarding your Windows PC whereas this Forum is just for Dell IDPA, so I hope you can post your question in the proper Forum.

I would expect to see some difference between the unformatted disk size and the usable size after formatting, but I agree that difference looks too large.  More disk details can be seen in Computer Management- Disk Manager.
