Why can my Dell Laptop connect to wifi but not get internet through it?

I have a dell vostro 3400, and I can connect to any wifi network, and while other computers can get internet through them, I can only get limited access. Also, I am running connectify(internet sharing program), a virtual wifi router and I can connect devices to it, but they cannot get internet through it (even when my laptop gets it through Ethernet). Is this a hardware problem? Software, OS? I've had the comp for over a year and it's always worked perfectly... Thanks!

I contacted DELL support and they said the same thing pretty much as jctravers said in one of these forums a couple of years ago.  They said to contact our provider and I did this morning.  The lady was very good and checked through my system with me in realtime.  Everything seems to be working as it should and she told me to call DELL again and maybe someone else can help me.  I just know they will want to charge me a bundle of money for that.....  I have good security on my computer but am wondering if I have some malware or virus.  How can I check for that?  Help please....  :)

s32144,

Save the document, then put it on a flash drive(or burn to a cd/dvd) and take it to a working computer. You may also want to run an ipconfig /all log, to.

I hope you don't think I am stupid; however, I have to ask this question.  If I run system information on the affected computer then how do I post it?

Well, I figured it out.  I check Webroot and this is what I found (and it worked):  "In some cases, Internet access is lost if a program called Svchost.exe is set to Block in the Firewall applications list. Changing this mode to Allow restores Internet access, in this situation. Follow the instructions below to change the setting for the Svchost.exe entry in the Firewall, if it is listed there and set to Block."  It was set to block and it instructed me to Allow it and whala once I rebooted I had internet service.  I guess my next question is:  What caused it to block since I was in the middle of something on the internet when it stopped working.  Computers......  Thanks for your help though.  I appreciate you trying to get me through this.

s32144,

Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. Wonder why Webroot blocked the connection?

Take care,

I just purchased a xps 14Z. At home my wired and wireless work fine. I am traveling and in the plane and at the admiral club I can connect to the routers but cannot get to the internet. I plugged in my wireless AT&T card and can get to the internet. What is wrong with my wireless card?

kurushektra,

Did you setup your wireless router? Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here?

I have the same problem where my laptop will not search the Internet. It says its connected toy wifi and all of my other wireless devices are connected and able to browse the net but not this laptop. I just enabled the dhcp and it still doesn't work and I don't know where to go from here. Thanks. Justin
