Dell PowerVault ME5 series disk selection when assigning into disk group
Hello Dell storage experts:
My company recently purchased a new ME5024 with 24 x 3.84TB SSD. We are in the midst of setting the storage to be used as VM datastores.
We read through the deployment guide and VMware best practices and come to the following regarding the setup, which I believe is quite standard:
- 2 disk group of 12 disks each
- ADAPT raid
- to carve out few volumes of various sizes from each disk group
However, when come to the disk selection for each disk group, should we do either
- disk 1,3,5,7,9... for one DG, disk 2,4,6,8,10... for another DG
or
- disk 1,2,3,4,5...12 for one DG, disk 13,14,15,..24 for another DG?
Does it matter, or it's only a matter of preference? Thanks in advance for any of your advice.

Hi,
Yeah, during configuration of disk pools, ME4 list alternate disk slots, but not for ME5. You can use the ME5 wizard to create your disk pool/group not in alternate order.

Hello, as I know the system chooses the disks for the disk groups by default. You can also pick the disks yourself. If you do that, make sure all the disks in a disk group have the same type and size. The system does not let you make disk groups with different disk types or sizes.
So, you can use any option for your disk group setup. The system will adjust the performance and capacity for the disk groups automatically. Also you can check below articles.

Hello Erman:
Thank you for your reply. If memory serve me right, the ME4 series chooses the disks in alternate slots when one tries to create a disk group but not in ME5. All the disks in my ME5 are of the same type and size. I just want to double confirm to see if there's nothing that I missed that could cause any undesirable effect. So far from all the docs (including those you provided above) there's no mention of any rules on disk slot selection so I'll assume either way will do. Thank you.
