@Mark in the UK , if you must need support for Support Assist, then the app itself is not working as intended.  Dell Update for Windows can also be used to check updates.

If your intention is checking updates for your system, I suggest a simple solution, just use Windows updates.  You will find that keeping your system up-to-date can simply done without many layers of tools.

Whichever you choose, a manual check can also provide the answer to your question.  For an example, to check for updates of an XPS 8940, you can click here to go to Support website.  Click on Find drivers (on the right) and look at drivers, firmware, or apps that were release recently.  They usually posted at the top of the page, and descending by date.  If your find the driver, apps that are used in your system, considering to download and installing them manually.  Most of times, you will get the message that the updates already been installed (by Windows).

On a side note, if you have an XPS 8940, be mindful with what you are updating as many users reported on here that some updates have caused their system to freeze or lock up.

@Mark in the UK :

Your topic has been marked as Solved.  Did one of Chino de oro's suggestions <here> fix your problem or are you still unable to run a check for available updates from the support page for your Dell computer?

If you still require further assistance please let us know your Dell computer model, Windows operating system, and current SupportAssist version number (which should be listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs & Features if SupportAssist is installed). It would also be helpful to know the exact error message, if any, you see when you launch SupportAssist and run a manual check for updates (Get Drivers & Downloads) from the Home tab.
