R730xd U.2 / NVMe Enablement Kit installation
Hello!
I failed finding information on the Dell U.2 enablement kit P31H2 so I am asking here.
Does this card absolutely have to be installed in an x16 PCIe Slot or will it work at a x8 as well (with reduced max. speed)?
What does the card do exactly? Splitting 16 lanes into 4x4 with bifurcation should as far as I know not require a big heat sink like that.
Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hello,
Do you have the 24X2.5 backplane?
Please note: field change to backplane configuration is not supported. It is selected at time of purchase. We do not have kits for upgrade so to attempt to do it we would have to try to piece part components together as best effort.
If you do have 24X2.5 backplane this should be the expander and cable.

I will provide some reference information that may answer your other questions you can review.
The expander should go in slot 4 and you need two processors to use slot 4.

Page 28 NOTE: Only Slots 5, 6, and 7 are supported in a single CPU configuration.
When using slots 1 through 4 on the riser, ensure that both the processors are installed on the system.
Slot 4 Bifurcation Controls the bifurcation of PCIe cards installed in the specified slot.
● When set to default, the slot operates at the default bifurcation for that slot.
● When set to x8x8 or x4x4x4x4, the slot bifurcates to either two or four links
depending on the slot capability.

I will note that those part numbers are Service part numbers. You would need to contact Sales and ask for the Spare Part Department to get a quote for purchase on these part numbers. Verify with them that these are the only two parts you need. The Service part numbers do not typically come up on the website.
