ESRS VE Installation Notes

As we move toward ESRS VE on an appliance and Policy Manager on a cloud server there are notes to self.

I was not a part of setting up the Version 2 and have only used PM as a user. Pretty blind to the ESRS setup as EMC managed.

So with EMC turning over ESRS configurations to the client there are things to learn.

The first for me was with Policy Manager.

The manual suggest Adobe Flash so when I had the cloud server installed I asked for Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Flash to be installed.

I never got it to work so that I might bring up PM on the server locally.  Through the fussing with EMC Support and my software guys it occurred to me that my thinking was wrong.  The server housing PM needs nothing.   It is my workstation that needs to have AF installed, and most of us do.

Reaching out with my system was enough which delightfully leaves the server free on any software installs.  I should add that I am using WINDOWS 2012 Server.

The second problem was getting email notifications when folks were signing on or in our case REQUESTING ESRS access.  The emails I was getting were coming from the ESRS Server and without the link for operations to go to for accepting REMOTE Access Requests.

The solution here ended up as a setup issue.  The mail server entered by cut and copy at installation was missing the first letter. So emails were failing.  This needed EMC support to edit a file in the TOMCAT7 setup.  I could find no location in PM itself to edit the email server like in ESRS.  So don't go muckin' about editing files without EMC support as it is NOT a simple NOTEPAD edit. I mention the problem symptoms to give a hint as to the location of the problem is PM not ESRS.

Sorry to hear about your struggle. I suppose you have installed latest Policy Manager (Release 6.6).

In the PM Operations guide it is mentioned the host that is accessing the Policy Manager MUST have Adobe Flash 11 installed to be able to display the Policy Manager pages. If you want to log into the PM from your windows 2012 server running the PM application, flash should be installed on the server itself as well.

The location on the policy Manager server where you can edit the mail-server is mentioned in the operations guide under "Editing the Policy Manager Configuration File" .

The request for access to a device (when "ask for approval" is configured on the PM) is sent from the PM, not from the ESRS server.

The PM operations guide under "Configuring Notifications for Ask For Approval Permissions" describes where and how you can edit the message sent to correct/include the link.

In case you need the PM operations guide, you can download it via https://support.emc.com/docu52323_Secure_Remote_Services_Policy_Manager_6.6_Operations_Guide.pdf?language=en_US.

I hope above helps you with implementing and configuring the solution to your needs.

Some good thoughts on the editing process.

I do have the manual, and surprise have read much of it.  Hence, I do know that the PM is replying when a EMC CE submits a request for access. My point there was that when I had the email server misconfigured, PM was NOT replying ESRS did the notification.  Which was my first hint something was wrong.  The second hint, was also from the manual that the PM reply email was supposed to have a link inserted so customers could click and attain the location to login and accept the request.

I like the section on editing settings.  However, I have not found anything within the manual on Little Person Options, System Settings....what ID and Password is to be used?

You can create new Roles, Roles and Users to configure your PM to match your requirements.

If you want to edit the email, go via assets , select the down-arrow and modify group. This will open the email body, which you can edit to meet your needs. This mail will be sent when a device connection attempt is made, and Policy is set to "Ask for approval"
