Inspiron 5559 headphones with microphone

Hello

I would use external headphones with microphone to do a meet on line by Meet, Skype etc. My problem is listeners does not hear my voice (external mic does not run). If I disconnect headphones with microphone and use camera and built in mic, then listeners hear my voice but obviously not well.  In the jack port of Dell Inspiron 5559 there is only logo of headphones. Does it mean external mic can not be used?  Thanks

Hi @GR_patino

Your laptop has a 3.5mm TRRS jack, which is compatible with several kinds of microphone headsets, as long as they comply with the TRRS format standard.

Once you have connected your headset, go to Windows Settings > System > Sound and scroll down until you find Input: change it to your headset mic.

You may also want to make sure that you have the latest driver available for your system:
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver | Driver Details | Dell US
This driver comes with a companion app called MaxxAudio that allows you to control the audio input/outputs directly when you connect a new audio device.
Make sure it's allowed to automatically run at Windows startup: open the Task Manager > Startup Apps and see that both Wavessvc64.exe and RtkAudUService.64 are enabled.

Windows Update tends to replace the driver with a seemingly newer version that is not 100% compatible with your laptop.
You should always avoid driver updates that aren't released directly by Dell.

@GR_patino

If you can absolutely exclude any hardware interference, then a quick workaround would be to use a kernel preloaded driver that has always proved to work in stiuations like this.

Go to Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers where you will find the Realtek sound chipset:
1. right-click on the Realtek device > Properties, then select the Driver tab.
2. Click Update driver
3. Select "Browse my computer for drivers"
4. Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
5. Uncheck "Show compatible drivers

6. Browse for Realtek and install Realtek High Definition Audio. There could be more than an option, pick the newest.

Again, before you do this, make sure Windows Update won't interfere with the new install.
A temporary solution could be to pause Windows Update for a week or two.

@Tatolino

Hello

using your suggestion external mic looks like run.

The driver you suggested is:

Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver_51T6N_WIN_6.0.1.8142_A07_03

instead before I used:

Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver_51T6N_WIN_6.0.1.8142_A07_01.

But now I have a new problem: I often hear a crackling sound.

I open the Task Manager > Startup Apps but both Wavessvc64.exe and RtkAudUService.64 are not present.

It is present “Waves MaxxAudio Service Application “.

I understand MS Windows tends to replace the driver; perhaps Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver_51T6N_WIN_6.0.1.8142_A07_03 has this origin.

Can you help me with these questions:

1) the crackling sound

2) how can I record on a file the voice coming from external mic on a file on disk? I only see a bar with blue color as sensor of received voice.

Thanks

Hello, after some months I have the same problem again. In my Inspiron 5559 the drive Realtek is installed, downloaded from

https://www.dell.com/support/home/it-it/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=51t6n

I repeat the installation to be sure to have a true Dell driver and not one by an upgrading of o.s.. Again microphone on headphones does not run. Among few days  i have to do a connection with a team. What test can I do to resolve?  Thanks someone help me.
