can't boot to external dvd player

I have a powered hub that I have attached a DVD writer/reader to. The hub is also connected to my Dell Venue Pro 8 5830. I can use this DVD writer/reader while in Windows 8.1 to burn a Macrium Rescue Disk. I've also been able to play videos with the DVD writer/reader while connected to my Dell tablet.

I want to be able to boot into the DVD player if I ever need to use my Macrium Rescue Disk to restore a saved backup image.

When I go into the bios to make sure that the DVD player is selected first, it is not shown in the list.

How do I set the Dell tablet to boot into the DVD player if it isn't shown in the Bios boot up list?

Could one use the Dell power + data USB OTG dongle, or a similar-such device from other manufacturers, to get around the power issue?  Then it's an issue of changing the BIOS to be able to boot from the DVD player, if that's possible.

Hi Big Dawg1,

Thanks for posting.

Unfortunately the DVD will not be recognized because it's going through the hub and the Venue Pro will not have sufficient power to run the DVD player by itself.  You will have to record your Rescue Disk onto a USB drive and boot from that.

Regards,

Robert

Big Dawg1, I have had good success in using the Dell dongle (albeit I find its physical design a bit odd) and it's reasonably priced--it may be just what you need.  I haven't tested what you're trying to do, however, and I don't know if the BIOS can be set to read from a DVD.

At least in the U.S., Dell covers shipping both ways, the last time I checked.  If you're in the U.S., you could try the dongle and return it if it won't work as desired.  (Or, even keep it for other use.)  Just a thought for your situation.

Thanks for the info. Yea I had considered the Dell Dongle but unless it will allow the bios to see the DVD player I see no need to sped the money.

If you find that you can get the Venue 8 Pro to see a dvd player in the bios...let us all know.

Thanks

And that's the question--if the DV8P's BIOS can be set to recognize a DVD player when it's attached using the Dell power + data USB OTG dongle.

Perhaps Dell's Robert P here can answer that (I haven't had experience with that).  Robert P?

Hardware required to perform the USB Windows 8.1 installation include the following: Micro USB – USB convertor, USB mouse, USB keyboard and USB flash.

A powered hub is highly recommended. (The Venue 8 Pro USB port can only provide 500mA of usable current. USB device may not work if totally required current is more than 500mA, this depends on your USB device.)

Thank you, Robert.  But does that answer the original question, if the tablet's BIOS can be set to recognize a DVD drive attached to the tablet with the Dell power + data dongle?

Only if the drive used to install the Windows is configured to boot UEFI.

Robert:

I afraid I don't understand

"Only if the drive used to install the Windows is configured to boot UEFI."

My tablet came with Windows pre-installed.  Besides I don't understand what this has to do with whether a external usb dvd drive, connected to a powered hub that is connected to the tablet, have to do with whether I can get the bios to recognize the dvd drive as a boot option?

Please expand on your answer.

Thanks.
