I am confused on the ESXi 5 version that Dell has configured.

I installed the VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.0.0-504890.x86_64-Dell_Customized_RecoveryCD_A03.iso on my ESXi servers. I installed from scratch so no updating. Is this esxi 5.0 update 1? If not should we apply update 1? I also have an Equalogic SAN and I use Multipahting on it. I did see the post about that.

Any help would be appreciated.

The patch listed by coconet, is the latest patch, BUT should not be installed directly onto your current build (504890).  You should do your updates per the following link: www.vmware.com/.../findPatch.portal

You would need to update to ESXi500-201112001 first; then do the:  update-from-esxi5.0-5.0_update01; then do: ESXi500-201204001; and finally ESXi500-201205001.  These updates need to be done in order.

A more controlled approach (and a lot easier) is to use the vSphere Update Manager by following the steps listed in this link: www.techrepublic.com/.../179

Here is the link to the update manager v5.0: www.vmware.com/.../vsphere-update-manager-50-release-notes.html

Looks like I an at 5.0.0.0 and build 504890. So how do I get to the latest?

Hello people,

to upgrade ESXi 5.0 follows the command below, before remembering that you should download the VMWare site.

esxcli software vib update --depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi500-201205001.zip

Fortunately I am building a new host as we speak and I will try that out.

Thanks

You can check your ESXi server Update and build number via the ESX Server service console login and use the vmware command

example:

# vmware -h

Vmware    -v, --version         Get version information for vmkernel

-l, --level           Get release level information

          -h, --help            Print this menu

# vmware -v

VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-623860

# vmware -l

VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Update 1

You can also highlight the ESX server in vSphere, and in the shaded area above the tabs is the host sever name,  the version and build number.

The minimum version for EqualLogic is Update 1 Build 623860

I just did the update manager and it is now on 702118 and applied 3 patches rebooted etc. Seemed too easy and  only took a couple minutes. Does Update Manager download patches on an automatic basis as I haven't done a manual one for quite a while but the latest patch was in there?

thanks

This depends on how you setup Update Manager v5, see this link for the documentation: www.vmware.com/.../vum_pubs.html, on that link, get the “Installing and Administering VMware vSphere Update Manager” and in Chapter 9 and 10 talks about the different options for updates, notifications, etc.
