XPS 8940, memory upgrade of 2x8GB

I have XPS 8940 i9 with 16GB ram (two 8GB 3200MHz DDR4 sticks). I want to upgrade to 32GB. Can I add two more 8GB sticks even though the specs says the system doesn't support it? Or should I just spend the extra money and buy two 16GB which the documentation says it does support? Thanks for your help. I would like to save some money here if possible.

I had 2x8GB in my XPS 8940 with a i7-11700. I read all posts and ordered 1 Crucial 8GB CT8G4DFRA32A and 1 Crucial 16GB CT16G4DFD832A. Based on the posts from  RoHe, cpu133 and others, I put the 2 RAM CRUCIAL in slots 1 and 2 and the original RAM Dell in slots 3 and 4 and the speed went to 2933 MHz as expected for a total of 40 GB. So happy to share and thank you all. :)))

It's working for me.  I took delivery of an XPS 8940 today that came with a pair of 8 gig Samsung chips each in the black DIMMS.  I harvested the pair of 8 gig Hynix chips out of my XPS 8930 and put the Samsung chips in DIMM slots 1 and 2 and the Hynix in slots 3 and 4.  The only thing is that the Hynix chips are 2666 and not 3200 as are the Samsung chips, so its clocking at 2633, to be expected to clock down to the slowest chips.  That part doesn't bother me as I really doubt there is going to be a performance hit down from 2933.

@srpawski  Glad that works!

Did you check to make sure RAM is running in dual channel mode, even if only at 2633 MHz? You can use CPU-Z (free).

Yes.  I downloaded CPU Z to make sure everything is good with the transfer.

Go to hear that Dell is shipping 16gb in XPS-8940 as TWO Dimms (so it runs in Dual-Channel mode). Nice.

Chalk up two more for the 'new' approach to upgrading memory. I just upgraded my XPS 8950 and my wife's Optiplex 9070 tower from 16GB to 32GB using pairs of 8GB Crucial sticks from Amazon. Zero problems. These discussions sure saved me a lot of time and stress.
