SNMP de Server Administrator se comunica con el agente SNMP mediante el protocolo de multiplexación de SNMP (SMUX). Cuando SNMP de Server Administrator se conecta con el agente SNMP, envía un identificador del objeto a un agente SNMP para identificarse como un sistema SMUX del mismo nivel. Dado que ese identificador de objeto debe estar configurado con el agente SNMP, Server Administrator agrega la siguiente línea al archivo de configuración del agente SNMP, /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf, durante la instalación (si es que no existe):
