Aurora R9, Adventures with power supplies

When I bought my Aurora R9 I was surprised the available power supply was only 850 watts for a SLI setup.

So of course, I finally decided to upgrade to a 1500 watt; how hard could it be since everything is standardized, right?

I thought I could leave the Dell cables connected to the motherboard and just swap out the power supply and reconnect the Dell cables.

No...there must have been a sale on 6 pin connectors...

I ended up having to use the new cables for everything.  The metal swing carrier for the power supply was the next problem, it has tabs and lips that hold the Dell unit securely, but have to be bent down so a larger (longer) power supply can fit.

Once I got the new one in, dressing the cables was like putting 10 lbs of something into a 5 lb bag.

Anyway, I got the job completed and everything works...super quiet power supply, might be my imagination, but I'd swear the picture quality is improved when gaming...more detailed.  Must have helped something because I've actually advanced a few levels in Doom Eternal since the upgrade.

As pretty as it's going to get. Quick, put the side panel back on!As pretty as it's going to get. Quick, put the side panel back on!

Thank you to all that commented on this post.

I hope my adventure helps someone who might be thinking about a power supply upgrade for their Aurora.

Now must get back to slaying demons...

I also use Power Balanced as default in AWCC, but all my games are set for High Performance.

Try it, if you don't see an improvement, you can always change it back.

Our systems are similar except I have 2 2080 Supers and a i9 9900KS.

Good Luck!

Wow! 1500W thats alot of power!

I have the R9 with the 850W PSU and I have always wondered what to run my power at in AWCC, I have it set to Power Balanced. I got into gaming this year in April and now that I'm playing Multiplayer now that there are alot of programs running in the background.

1. The game " DCS "

2. AWCC

3. MSI Afterburner for the GPU fan control.

4. Discord

5. SRS and/or Teamspeak

6. Tracker IR5

So thats alot running to play a game, should I run my PSU at High Performance?

My humble specs:

R9 - i7-9700K - M.2 NVMe 2TB - 32gb xfury Ram /Enabled OC profile2 @ 2933mhz and running a 2080 Super.

Any suggestions on how I should run my PSU is welcomed.

Thx.

Okay so you run High Performance when gaming only, thats good to know and I'll give a try. I would imagine theres a hot difference coming out of the top of the R9 which I guess is normal. You have a beast of a system !!! I'm really loving my R9 machine and it runs my game like a champ !

Thx for your input and advice.

Good Morning,

Well I tried the High Performance mode yesterday and your right I do see a slight difference and performance running my game. But I have a question on the Home section in AWCC on the left side of the Launch game are you setting the Power to High Performance there and on the bottom right where it says Active Default Theme is this where I can choose to select Power Balanced so that when I close out the game I dont need to be in High Performance mode when I'm not playing the game. I would like the R9 to go to Balance settings. I have my Ram OC settings enabled there and Thermal settings also to where when I open my game my fans kick in and when I shut it down the fans go to idle. Thx for any suggestion on this. And again I do see a difference in running the game at High Performance and Thermal Performance for sure and will continue doing so... Thx.

That is correct, then you should hear the fans throttle up when you start a game and slow down when the you close the game.  I'm glad this is working for you, best of luck.
