Alienware Area 51 R2 How to Power Supply Swap to Third Party
Hi, i just Registered here so i can report on my Upgrade !
Short Story > i bought a Brand New Area 51 R2 > i7-5930x Base Model >
I did Upgrade the PSU to 850Watt Evga , RAM to 32GB DDR4 Hyper X Fury @ 2400Mhz , 2 x Samsung 850Pro 512GB in RAID 0 , eVGA Titan X Super Clocked Edition 2 x 3.0TB Seagate Constellation ES3 HDD.
so Far so good, very nice little Overpriced PC, bit i Love that Case so much.
Upgrades Done Today
Replaced Stock 2 x Extrem Loud DELTA FANs and 1 x Nidec FAN all of them are 120 x 38mm
with>>>
3 x Corsair SP120 High Performance Version 120x25mm http://www.corsair.com/en-us/air-series-sp120-pwm-high-performance-edition-high-static-pressure-fan
now the Area 51 runs really Silent and has still a good Portion of Cooling when OC i dont think i will need the 147cfm that the DELTA FANS provide and never the 4.500rpm.
Replaced the no so Good Stock 850Watt that had COIL WHINE PSU that AW-DELL puts in that nice Machine ( my opinion ) even the BTO Upgrade 1500Watt doesnt deliver as much Performance.
Here ist what i did ...
1. took out the Stock PSU , 8 Screws thats it
2. i did buy the eVGA PSU here it is GOLD 80 + , and 100% Pure Power for at least 2 Titan X in my case enough no need to get Higher Power one
http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=220-G2-0850-XR
3. i had to Take out ALL Stock Cables , you cannot Use the Stock Cables from AW PSU with the eVGA PSU
4. the eVGA PSU has enough Good Cables in the Box , they all FIT , nothing need to be Customized here.
5. the Point i choose the EVGA is they have Specific 2 x 8 PIN CPU Allignment PowerPlugs that you will need for the AW Mainboard just look at the Cables you take out.
>>> i tryed the CORSAIR 1000WATT PSU , the Area51 did not START with that PSU <<<<<
6. the EVGA is 180mm Long when the Stock PSU is 190mm so no big deal even better 10mm shorter
7. When you put the PSU in the Case , first slide in the without the FRAME and then Hold the PSU from Inside the Case an use the Screws to thighten it.
i did read a lot of people asked for a Solution on How to use a third party PSU and most Forum Reports did it wrong or failed to Boot the Machine,

Nice work and thanks for posting.
I wonder why the Corsair PowerSupplies are not working (W8Lift's thread says the same).
So, you think the stock Dell-AW 1500watt PS is ok? ... just pricy, right?

Think the Delta PSU (OEM) is garbage, only one year warranty, no added features like ECO Mode plus it is so ugly. Think Dell should revisit the PSU's. It sticks out so bad in this case.
I believe the PSUs in corsairs senses a fault, and shuts off. I played with the test button and it kept tripping like there was a short in the system. (obviously there wasn't) but it only triggered with the motherboard power connected.

thx happy to help out people who paid PREMIUM for that nice Machine :),
i think the both DELL OEM PSU 850watt & 1500watt are not good at all, the Prize Tag of the 1500Watt is a bit high, if you compare it to the all WORKING EVGA top dogs PSU . 850WATT 1000WATT etcc....
for my needs iam planning to add a Second Titan X , so the eVGA 850 Watt is Rock Solid for my Specs.
For Testing if the OEM PSU Performs well (Pure Power to the TITAN X )
Results i did 3 TEST Runs with Unigine Valley Benchmark set to Extreme HD
Everything Set to Normal , no OC for the CPU, no Over Voltage the Ttitan everythiung STOCK Speed.
after 3 RUNS with the OEM PSU i had > 3890 > 3897> 3932 Point and a Max FPS of 172 to 181
after 3 RUNS with the eVGA PSU i had > 4093 > 4102> 4129 Points and a Max FPS of 186 to 192
Conclusion
With my TITAN X 12GB Evga Superclocked i put in the Middle SLOT to get Full PCIe x16 x 16 V3.0
the OEM PSU made a COIL WHINE like a Formula 1 Engine ( on 1st SLOT and the Middle SLOT)
NO the DELL OEM (DELTA PSU ) are not good at all !
after 2 days i got my Area 51 R2 i called Dell and told them about the PSU , they sended me in 24hrs
a NEU Replacement , that had the Same Noise ,

ehmm, what do you mean ?
i installed 2 Standard 2,5" Samsung 850 PRO SATA600 Drives, there is nothing to change in the Bios ! they are standard SSD drives .
i you mean Raid 0 Setup, you must set the bios SECURE boot = OFF and than you CTRL + I in when the PC starts up and Setup the SSD RAID !
but Intel RAID does not Feature TRIM Support ! that is not so good after a while

Litho bro , thx for sharing :) thinking about getting the evga t2 1000 watt psu did all the cables with your evga psu unit reach fine to the hard drives etc ? Does the power cable to the DVD / blu Ray drive work fine from the new psu ?

You had another qwestion from another thread, I'll answer that here.
it'll be the 4pin Molex peripheral which powers the blue FI/O board
JohhnyGuru: #1 test sight
The circled connex are the device end, the hardware end: since a power supply front panel can have any endless combination of pin patterns? You use the approved cables. That is because the manufacturer has ensured that the sqware end is wired in all of the right slots. It's the sqware end of the cable that dictates what the device end does, ultimately.
Those cables above may work for all 850 1000 1300 1600 G2 P2 T2, but may be wrong for other EVGA models, certainly may be wrong for other brands. Let's pretend you plug that black 4pin into the T2. The device end will read on a voltmeter as 5v-ground-ground-12v, ok? It has to.
Now, pretend youi plug your case harness 4pin into it (which has a 6pin modular connector). It might read 5v-grd-grd-12v & if it did it would be ok to use it, but, the sqware end has its own unique wiring scheme, so it could just as easily read 5v-12v-grd-grd or grd-5v-12v-grd ... if it did, you would endanger your stuff, maybe your life who knows.
What we do in times like this is a bench test, make a sketch of T2 factory black, compare it to the case harness, and make any changes at the sqware end, which means back the wire out & place it into whatever correct new slot it needs to go in. I do that kind of stuff, find me here if you haven't already, where I show my hand-made case harness: Alien Swap
I took a factory Antec 1300 cable set - hand-worked it - to be correct for 1500w Delta
All those many wires had to be re-organized in order to work. That is why your factory case harness may not work with the T2. You test first, on your dining room table for instance, nothing plugged in but cables - probe them with a voltmeter, make any changes to the case harness cables, as I said. Antec cables are $25 a pouch, shipped. A steal. I don't have an Antec 1300, I just bought the pouch, separate. But if I did have an Antec 1300? I could take the factory case harness we all have, and rebuild it to work with the Antec. I'd have to re-do the whole thing. At the modular 'sqware' end. Once it's correct, the device end works (=
The same as you might have to rebuild your case harness to match a T2. If you did? Your case harness then might be good for 1300G2 & the 1600 line-up. I hope that makes sense. Too many users online think that a cable is a cable, that all modular power supplies are somehow universal. They are not.
Approved cables only:
cables that pass the voltmeter test can be used
cables that fail get rebuilt, reworked, retested
