Alienware X51 R2 - GPU Upgrade

Jump to solution

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about upgrading the GPU of my Alienware X51 R2, but I read on other forums that there are some issues in relation to the size of the GPU.

I use Nvidia right now and I'd like to stick to that manufacturer and I would like to know which graphics card would be the best to choose and would also fit inside the tiny case without modifying it.

My computer specs are:

Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 (8MB Cache, up to 3.9GHz with Turbo Boost Technology)

Ram: 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Ti with 2GB GDDR5

Storage: 1TB (64MB Cache) 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s

OS: Windows 10

Power Supply: 330W AC Adaptor

Thanks in advance!

The best Nvidia options you have are either the GTX 960 (2 GB or 4 GB) or the GTX 970. The PNY GTX 960 and GTX 970 fit in there with no problems. Same goes for the regular EVGA GTX 970, ASUS TURBO GTX 960 and GTX 970, Palit GTX 970, and regular MSI GTX 960 (and I think they have a regular GTX 970 too).

Currently owned computers:
AW13 R2 | i7-6500U | GTX 960m 4 GB + GA (R9 285 2 GB / RX 480 8 GB) | 16 GB 1600 MHz | 1800p Touchscreen | 2 x 500 GB SATA M.2 | Graphics Amplifier Performance Analysis with 13 R1
Desktop | i7-3770 | GTX 980 4 GB | 16 GB 1600 MHz | 120 GB mSATA + 960 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD | 600w PSU
Formerly owned computers:
HP Pavilion 15-n280us (given away) | Apple Mac Mini 2012 (sold)  | m15x (damaged mobo) | 13 R1 (death by unknown) | m14xR2 (Tradied In)

The ones I mentioned will fit. If you want to be safe, choose the PNY GTX 970 as that is the GTX 970 Alienware uses in the X51 R3.

To iamFrosty: you need the 330w PSU for the GTX 970. Just choose what ecapone chooses.

I have the following specs on my unit and am looking for an upgrade to maybe the GTX 970. Depending on the brand and model, the GTX 970 comes in different sizes. I'm not sure if anyone has a surefire model that works. Also, do I need to upgrade my power supply to the 330w?

Processor: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz
Processor Main Features: 64 bit Quad-Core Processor
Cache Per Processor: 6 MB L3 Cache
Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600
Storage: 1TB SATA 3Gb/s 7,200RPM
Optical Drive: Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+/-RW, CD-RW)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB GDDR3
Power Supply: 240W External Power Supply
Operating System: Windows 10 64-Bit

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I honestly would prefer the GTX 970 since it should be way better than the GTX 960, but are you sure I'm not going to have "space" issues?

And, if not, which of the ones you mentioned would you choose?

Sorry to ask, but I frankly do not understand all the differences between one manufacturer and another.
