Alienware m17x r4

I got an alienware m17x r4 with 3D . What i Wonder on is: i want to upgrade my gpu to gtx 980m 8gb ddr5 . But i am reading that you have to run in optimus mode. Heres my question what is optimus mode? I have upgraded my bios to A12 . When i go in bios and look i see legacy mode and uefi mode. How do i know if i am in optimus mode?

Optimus mode is basically where you have both the Intel graphics and dedicated video card allowed in your desktop. The alienware m17x r4 comes with a key combination that you can use to switch between the intel graphics and dedicated graphics. By pressing FN+F7 you switch between them. If you switch to your dedicated graphics only and insert your gtx 980m it should work fine, the only problems is that there are no drivers for it, so you'll have to mod the inf file that comes with the nvidia drivers.
