Drive Firmware update instruction question

On my Area 51 ALX I have the "Sata 6Gb/s 7,200 2 TB SEAGATE; ST32000641AS Drive" which I installed on June 22/11. It presently has firmware CC13

Found and downloaded from dell site the recommended firmware update being BX65CC44.zip for this drive with release date of 10/18/2011.  The zip file has the following 2 folders and files.

  • bx65cc44\Dos
  • 09/06/11  15:09             3,654 CC44.bat
  • 06/06/11  14:53         1,608,704 CC44.lod
  • 25/08/09  15:32            20,125 CWSDPMI.EXE
  • 09/06/11  15:00         1,842,770 FDL.cab
  • 07/06/11  10:00               253 Standard.CFS
  • 06/06/11  17:16         1,779,332 STE20010.exe
  • bx65cc44\Windows
  • 07/06/11  14:25         7,704,756 BX000200.exe

I am a little confused about the posted installation instructions reading:

"up the computer with USB key.
2. In “Dos” folder, just type “CC44.BAT” at the DOS prompt and press the enter key.
3. Your system will now start updating the HDD firmware. Once the firmware update is completed, your system will display a "DRIVE PASSED" message.
4. Remove your USB key, and turn off your system using the computers power button. Once the computer has been powered down, you can now turn the computer on normally."

specifically:

  1. what is meant by: "up the computer with USB key"?  i.e.
can one not after unzipping the file into a new folder on the desktop, use CMD (in admin mode, if necessary) go to the DOS folder and execute that bat file?
  2. can one not use the windows version for installation, given it has an .exe file, by clicking on that file?

There appears to be the front end of the instructions missing on the Dell web site.

Disregard my original post.  While the instructions are certainly incomplete and Dell should correct them, and as such I hope for those having the OEM version, this is being relayed to those responsible for posting such instalation instructions..

It may also be advisable to include the fact that the firmware update applies only to OEM versions of the drive.

As far as my drive is concerned, being a retail version, there is no Firmware update.  While Model Name and details are idendical, searching the Seagate site by model name as well as with the addition of the S/N of my drive, I am being told there is not yet a firmware update for my drive or need for it.

Thus the OEM version of the drive must have firmware which preceeded that in drives sold by Seagate in the Retail business.
