Hum in Alienware Area 51 R2 front microphone port.
I have a few headsets which I plug into the computer via USB. One of them is a wireless one with a USB dongle. But it also has cords to connect to the headset and microphone ports on the computer. When I use it wireless it sounds fine but when I plug it in directly, there is a hum in the microphone. I've heard that some motherboard based sound cards have this so is this the case here? Are there any settings I can try changing? Or should I just get a USB adapter to convert the 3.5mm wires to USB? Thanks.

You can try re-routing the Mic wire or installing a ferrite ring at both ends of the internal cable.
Yes, if you have a nice headset already, an inexpensive USB Sound-card dongle is also a good solution. I think it works because the audio signals are only analog on the outside of the computer (past the USB-Dongle).
