My Alienware m14x hinge got stuck and cracked the screen in half

Hi a couple days ago i was just opening up my laptop and when i flipped it open the hinge somehow got stuck and wouldn't move thus breaking apart and cracking my screen open and little black plastic parts fell out. Everything still works it's just i want the hinge fixed. My laptop is out of warranty but i'm just wondering if i can still get it fixed. I tried to move the hinge back and forth but it wouldn't move at all. I also tried to call support services but they keep transferring me to other people and those people don't pick up their phones. I already tried to call 4 times and the exact same thing keeps happening so i really don't know what to do anymore. If anyone got suggestions on what to do that will be great!

These  are pictures of what the current state of my laptop is in.

Unless you have a Complete care insurance plan, the damage won't be covered under warranty.  You'll likely need a new screen and back cover (with hinges) -- depending on what else, you may also need a new bottom case assembly.

You can call Dell for a repair estimate:

Or ask a local computer shop for a repair estimate.

parts-people.com is good for buying parts if you plan to do the repair yourself (even with the screen, the parts total should be under $200, exclusive of labor).

Hi!

I recommend you send an email describing your problem to alienhelp@dell.com so they can give you more information about out of warranty repairs. Please include your Service Tag and contact information so they can get in touch with you.

I actually sent in my m14x for this same issue and was told the repair would be $430. Dell has had my laptop for 2 weeks and now I am being told that they don't have the parts to fix it and will be refunding me the money. Apparently even if you pay them to fix it they still won't fix it.

How is it that a company that puts together custom computers does not have spare parts to make this repair?

Just got off the phone with support. This is where the real problem lies for everyone with this hinge issue since the issue happens usually after the warranty period is over. Dell will not fix my m14x because it is out of warranty and they only have a limited number of parts to be used for out of warranty repairs. If it was in warranty then they would fix it.

Dell will not acknowledge this as a defect and will not fix it if it is out of warranty. But the support guy suggested website where I could purchase the part.

There is this website http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=12990 that says they specialize in dell repairs, at least someone out there does. If anyone wants to replace the whole lid assembly the part number is YFTP4.

Had this exact problem a few months ago, also out of warranty.. Actually thought that was a pic of my m14x.. I've just been leaving it open and trying not to move the screen too much.. Recently blew my speakers and so I've found the motivation to do something about it and found replacement hinges and cover through Dell's site.. Plan on doing the fix myself when they come in..

Have you completed the repair yet? I am in the same situation and am hoping to be able to repair the hinge without paying too much.

Once I had it opened up I found that it wasn't just the hinges but the whole back panel needed replacing..  Just over $90 including both speaker sets..
