The Alienware X51 R2, GTX 970 and Power

Hi all,

I'm gonna get straight to the point here.

Can the Alienware X51 R2 run the GTX 970(stock)?

Does it need to be downclocked to run?

Is the 330W power enough for the GTX 970?

Thanks in advance

Ray

A lot of people have upgrade to the GTX 970 fine without much effort (read: no downclocking) on their X51 R2 with 330w PSU. You should be fine.

If you have the r2 model you won't have any problem upgrading with gtx970. This is base on my experience with my recent upgrade to gtx 970. I posted a thread with my upgrade if you want read that. Just make sure you buy the reference card..

Just to ask a question along these lines... I Purchased and installed an EVGA GTX 960 which fits perfect. Specs say it recommends a 400 W power supply or greater. As you know my computer Alienware X51 R2 has a 330 W power pack. I recently found out that there is no way to put another power supply in due to proprietary reasons?? Is this true?? I purchased an EVGA 500 W power supply which has to be outside of my computer but who cares I just want it to work flawless like it has been. My son is dieing to play it with the new card. DOnt want to let him down. Any help would help everyone... Thank you so much

Yeah it's true that you can't put another power supply and it's because of the limitations of the motherboard. However,if I'm not mistaken, the power requirements for the 960 is actually lower than that of the 970. Assuming you have the reference card(no modifications to the graphics card), it should work just fine without you having to install a new power supply unit. My 970 has been working well for the past few months so your 960 should be fine too. Even though it says it needs a higher wattage than what the x51 can provide,it should work.
