Upgrade my Alienware 17 laptop
Hi all,
I have had my laptop for a few years now, i want to know if i can upgrade it i.e. processor/graphics card and if so what to?, finally would it be cost effective apposed to buying a fresh laptop?
I believe that the graphics card is built in to the processor but i could be wrong as i'm a complete computer/laptop novice....
Thanks in advance, [:)]

You can upgrade you CPU to anything in the 4th Gen series (that's what the "4" stands for in 4700MQ)
I think the fastest available CPU in 4th Gen is a 4940MX, still a VERY fast CPU that is equal to current CPU's

GPU's are a different story, you can go for a 8GB GTX980M but you will have to learn how to modify NVidia drivers so they install, there are lots of tutorials on the web, once you have done it a few times it will take you less than 30 seconds, but theres a bit of a learning curve at first :)
You "may" possibly be able to install a GTX1060M, but there is still discussions as to weather it will work, you will need a 3D screen for this GPU as the "10" series GPU's from NVidia no longer support any form of LVDS screen connection, only eDP which is what a 3D screen on your model uses.
The GTX1070 are an odd shape with a large piece sticking out of the side so looks like that wont fit (still discussing that too)
The GTX1080M - Forget it, Dell has thrown out the MXM3.0B GPU configuration and they are MXM3.0C or something like that, they are a lot larger than the MXM3.0B GPU's so wont fit either, and they draw to much power for the MXM3.0B slot to handle (still discussing that too)
